National Down Syndrome Awareness Month

By Presidential Proclamation (#6611), October 1993 was recognized as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. In the last 15 years, much has changed to positively affect the lives of those individuals affected by Down syndrome. Improved medical care, early intervention therapies, mainstreaming, and various special education services as well as increased life expectancy.

And yet many of the challenges facing these special individuals and their families remain the same. Biased or misinformed opinions from the medical community. Outdated medical information. Access to suitable health care insurance. Limited employment opportunties. Pigeon-holing. Sterotyping. "The" stigma of having a disability. Being told that that your child can't or probably won't.

Hence the continued need to raise awareness and understanding of the unique talents and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.

We ask that you join us on Wednesday, October 15th for a very special event. In recognition of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the "I Have a Voice" Photo Gallery (see www.gigisplayhouse.com/ihaveavoice.asp) will be unveiled at 6:30 pm in center court of College Mall. Tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. Bring your family. We hope to see you there.

Thank you, Tim and Kim Rienks
