Monroe County Community School Corporation Holds Parent Talk

On Walking the Talk of Inclusive Excellence

The Monroe County Community School Corporation held on their 5th Parent Talk of the 2018-2019 school year on Wednesday, February 20th, 2019 at the MCCSC Co-Lab with an engaged room audience and participants from their Facebook Live feed.

During the first part of the evening, MCCSC’s Equity and Inclusion Coordinator, Mr. Rafi Hasan, discussed the equity teams in the schools and shared about some of our culturally responsive and sustaining practices. Mr. Hasan stated, “Inclusive excellence is an enduring commitment, and collective responsibility shared among administrators, educators, staff members, and the community, to ensure equity, access, and opportunities for all students. This commitment must not only be present in our literature but also practiced by our students and the members of our learning community.”

The last part of the evening educators from Summit Elementary discussed “Windows and Mirrors,” an approach to children’s literature that derived from culturally responsive practices. This program provides children with literature that reflects the world around them by positively impacting the view of themselves and those with whom they share similarities and differences. Participants discussed diverse literature amongst groups.
