MCCSC Schools Host Several Veterans Day Programs

Veterans Day

MCCSC Schools Veterans Day Activities

On November 11th each year our nation observes Veterans Day, honoring persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. Our schools have a rich history in participating in Veterans Day activities and honoring those who have served. Since November 11th falls on a Sunday, our schools will be observing the holiday on November 8th through November 13th. Many of the activities are open to the public and veterans are encouraged to visit for recognition.

Arlington Heights

On Monday, November 12th from 9:30-10:30 AM, Arlington Heights will be having a Veterans Day program. They are inviting all family and community members that are Veterans.  They will have a guest speaker, Lindsey Smith, the Choir and student body will perform a couple of songs, and they recognize all of the veterans by the military branch in attendance.  Veterans are invited to stay after for cake.

On Monday, November 12th at 8:45 AM, Binford Elementary is having a breakfast for all current and past members of our armed forces and their Binford families.  Breakfast will be followed by a program in the auditorium with special guest speaker veteran and Bloomington Fire Chief Jason Moore. Their guest speaker for the event is Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Sam Davis.  This is an amazing opportunity for our students and families of those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.  Sam is the grandfather of two of our students.

Davis was near the South Vietnamese city of Cai Lay in 1967 when his unit came under fire. He was wounded, but took over a burning artillery piece and fired off several rounds at the Viet Cong. He then used an air mattress to cross a river and rescue wounded before joining another unit with a howitzer to continue fighting.

Davis broke his back but continued serving in the Army until 1984. His actions inspired those of the lead character in the blockbuster movie Forrest Gump. In the film, it is him getting his medal with Tom Hanks face superimposed on him.

Davis has also been awarded a Silver Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was among veterans who appeared at the coin toss at Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis.
