• The Social Skill for the week of October 30th is: Having a Conversation

    The steps are:

    • Look at the person
    • Use a pleasant voice
    • Listen to what the other person says
    • When there is a break in the conversation, ask a question or share your thoughts

Knowing the appropriate way to have a conversation is an important life skill to learn. At home, children can practice having a conversation with family members and friends. Remind children of the skill steps. It is also often helpful to model an inappropriate way to have a conversation (no eye contact, using an unkind voice, interrupting) and then model the appropriate way to have a conversation so that children can see and hear the difference.

Practicing this skill at home using the teaching steps listed above will help children learn the skill. For example, if your child asks to stay up late and you tell them “no” it would be a natural time to practice the skill. It is also important to give children a reason why you told them “no”.
