Independent Reading (IR)

back to Open House

Students are responsible for completing 300 pages of independent reading per month. Students must have an IR book in their desks at all times. All monthly reading is to be turned in during the last week of each month. I will be providing the class with a monthly list of genre topics to guide their book selection.   I discourage students from reading Goosebumps and other similar types of series books.  The purpose for this independent reading program is to encourage students to read from a wide variety of genres, not just the ones they are familiar with.

Each student will be required to complete one book report/activity each month.  The requirements for each report will vary, therefore; I have assigned a “date” when I will present the monthly topic to the students. During this time they will receive detailed information and requirements for that particular book report.  These book reports will be considered long-term projects.  Some sample genres include; sports topic, Newbery Medal, multicultural, adventure, mystery, biography of a famous American Revolutionary, fantasy, favorite authors, how-to recipes (this one is a lot of fun!)
