Book Club
|
An
enriched and in-depth literature-based program, Book Club, serves as the
foundation of our reading/language arts curriculum. The Book Club program
guides the learner to listen, inquire, and respond to literature individually
and within small groups. Students will be engaged in small or whole group
discussions about; a) important story elements (character, plot, setting,
etc..); b) author’s purpose for writing; c) point of view; d) interesting
vocabulary; e) recognizing the connections between literature and life; f)
drawing conclusions; and g) recognizing characteristics of different non
fiction/fiction genres.
Important aspects of the regular fifth grade
curriculum will be addressed through activities in language arts, reading,
research skills, and mathematics. Most of the themes we will be exploring stem
from our Social Studies curriculum; however we will be focusing much of our
attention on diversity, multiculturalism, and character. Our first theme focuses on friends and
family. As the students explore a variety of literature, they will expand their
understanding of people from diverse backgrounds. Students will explore how
personal growth and development of self often contributes to the development of
sympathy for the needs of others. Other areas of inquiry include Immigration,
The American Revolution, Prejudice /Diversity Awareness, and Personal
Challenges.
