7th Grade Rotation

All students have art daily for 6 weeks.
In 7th grade, we study the arts and crafts of Tribal & Traditional peoples around the world.
The pace moves quickly during this time and we will complete about 5 projects.
The Rotation classes are different than the Art & Artists classes.

Grading & Class Description

Projects

Creative Color Wheel
Students design 4 thumbnail sketches for an original Color Wheel.
We review the vocabulary of painting and huesof a color wheel.
They must use the appropriate primary, secondary, and intermediate hues.
Finally the students paint their chosen design on large white paper.

Pen & Ink Barn with Watercolor
This is a skill building project where students use the traditional equipment of crow quill pens and permanent black ink.
First they copy from a page of examples of marks that artists might use for pen & ink techniques.
I call this " a vocabulary of marks".
Then, we do a lesson on perspective drawing.
Finally each student chooses from a packet of pen & ink barns to copy a barn as best they can.
The creative stage of this project is the completion in watercolor.
I make 4 copies for the students of their barn,
and they paint each one with their choices of colors and sky patterns wet on wet technique of watercolor.

Circle Design
We watch a video of the life and work of Maria Martinez, San Ildesfonso potter.
I have original pottery from a few of the Pueblos of the 4 corners areathat the students can view.
Students create these Circle Designs as plans for the designs of their clay vessel in the style of the American Southwest.

Pueblo Pottery
Students build a pinch pot with white clay.
The goal is to create a very smooth and delicate shape that they will paint using red clay slip.
Students will be graded on shape and patterns.
