Making Netscape Bookmark Icons

Last Updated 11/24/03

With Netscape, it is possible to make an icon that will open up a particular website when it is double-clicked. This can be very useful for making a shortcut to a long URL (web address) without having to start Netscape on every computer and add the bookmark traditionally - this bookmark you could keep in your Locker, for example.

Note: These instructions are written for Netscape for the Macintosh. While I believe the PC version can do this as well, the procedure will likely be very different.

  1. Log in as Teacher.

  2. Log in using the Mac Login Utility, to enable Netscape. If you skip this step, Netscape won't start.

  3. Start Netscape.

  4. Go to the page you want to make the bookmark of, either by navigating there or by typing the URL in manually. To type it in manually, follow these steps:
    1. From the File menu, select "Open --> Location in Navigator"
    2. A dialog box labelled "Open Location" will appear. Type in the URL you want to make the icon of, and click "Open". (In this example, we're using the MCCSC homepage.)

  5. Once the page is open, go to the Bookmarks menu, and select "Add Bookmark".

  6. Go to the Bookmarks menu again, and select "Edit Bookmarks".

  7. A new Bookmarks window appears, listing all of the bookmarks available. Find the bookmark you just created. Place the mouse pointer directly on the name of the bookmark, and drag it to the desktop.

  8. A new icon will appear on the desktop, named the same thing as the bookmark's name.

  9. Move the new bookmark icon to the location where you want to keep it (locker, disk, etc).
