Webmail Attachments: A Quick Guide

Last Updated 12/08/03

To send an attachment in Webmail:

  1. Click the "Compose" button to start a new e-mail message.

  2. Fill in the address, subject line, and a brief message decribing the attachment.
NOTE: MCCSC recommends deleting e-mails with attachments that you aren't expecting or which aren't explained in the e-mail itself, so it's always best to add a message describing what you're sending.

  3. When you're ready to attach the file, click the "Add Attachment" button beneath the "Subject" line.

  4. In the new window which opens, click the "Browse" button. You'll be presented with a standard window for selecting files, much like you would see in Word.

  5. At the bottom of the window is a drop-down menu labelled "Files of type:" Click the menu and select "All files (*.*)".

  6. Now find the file you wish to send. Once you have found it, click the file once to select it and click the "Open" button.

  7. The file window will close, and the name of your file will appear in the field next to the "Browse" button.

  8. Click the "Upload to Attachments" button underneath of the file name field.

  9. You will be returned to the e-mail message compose window. If you need to attach more files, repeat steps 3 through 8. If not, and your message is complete, click the "Send" button.

To retrieve attachments in Webmail:

Some attachments will automatically show themselves in the same window as the e-mail message when the window is opened. Others will simply be listed as an attachment, and require you to take action to either open or save them. The most foolproof method for opening an attachment involves saving it to your computer first.
NOTE: Always make sure you know what an attachment is before opening or saving it!

  1. Open the e-mail message with the attached file. At the bottom of the text message you should see an icon and a file name along with a description of the file. For example:

EGP Update Doc.doc, attachment of type application/msword

  2. Right-click the title of the attachment, and select "Save Target as . . ." or "Save Link As . . ."

  3. You'll be presented with a standard save window, such as you might see in Word. Select the location where you want the file to be saved, and click "Save".
NOTE: For temporarily needed items, the desktop is fine for saving. However, if it something you need to keep put, it in your locker.

  4. Go to the location where you saved your file, and double-click it to open it. If your computer has a default program for handling files of that type, it will open in that program. If it doesn't open, start the program you want to open it in, and open it using the "open" command from the "File" menu.
