Mac Imaging Project

Thanks for your patience.

This page was so woefuly out of date that I have just scrapped it to
start over from scratch. Sorry for the lack of content.
Rather than work on the page, I've been getting the Mac Imaging process as
we need it here at MCCSC finalized. As of the beginning on the 2000-2001
school year, I had it down to just needing a few tweaks, but then OS 9.1
happened. We're still in pretty good shape overall, but it hasn't been
that long since I figured out how to solve certain problems. Now we're in
the implementation stage.
Here's the short version:
- Software in use: Apple's Software Restore (ASR)
program, the same thing Apple uses on the CDs it ships with Mac computers.
ASR can handle both HFS and HFS+ disk formats, doesn't care about drive
sizes, and has options for restoring some or all of an image to a hard
drive.
- What kind of support can we expect for ASR? ASR is
part of Apple's Software Developer's kit, so it's a fully supported Apple
product. We can call them and get help with problems, and we can expect
that the product will be updated and produced for a while to come.
- Image type: ASR uses standard Apple DiskCopy images,
so disk images can be opened and explored/files copied without having to
run ASR. As a result, you can go get particular files off the image if
ASR's options aren't what you need.
That's it for now. I'll try to work on this page soon and get it to the
point where it provides useful information.
