Geography Project

Rationale

The purpose of this project is twofold:

1. To explore the geography and cultures of the non-Western world;
2. To address the State of Indiana Standards for 7^th grade Social Studies.

For many students, 7^th grade is the only time in their academic career that they explore the part of the world that contains 3/4s of the world’s population, 2/3s of its land, and is the area that will most likely continue to grow in importance as the 21^st century progresses.

Task

Students will work in groups of three or four to create a product that addresses the Indiana Standards for their particular region of choice. The finished product should include visuals, text, and a summary handout for class distribution. Students will chose from the regions listed below.

Regions

1. North Africa & Southwest Asia
2. South Asia
3. China and Its Neighbors
4. Japan and the Koreas
5. Southeast Asia
6. East and Central Africa
7. West Africa and South Africa
8. Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, and Antarctica
