Language Arts is an area that particularly lends itself to students becoming life-long learners.   Students in my classes are reading at all times.  Reading improves vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills, and spelling (all the language arts!).

Spirit Block

Seventh Grade Spirit Block is made up of three academic classes, English, Science and Social Studies.  The Spirit Block teachers are:  Mrs. Morgan, Science, Mrs. Marvin, English, and Mr. Morgan, Social Studies. Spirit Block classes meet periods 3, 4, and 5 each day.   The ALPS seventh grade English class is also in Spirit Block.  All classes cover the language arts through themed literary units.

8th grade English

The eighth grade English class encompasses all the language arts: reading, writing, language mechanics and conventions, speaking, and listening.  These are covered through thematic literary units.  The Prentice Hall Literature textbooks and  workbooks encompass all these skills.  A “mini-autobiography” with one chapter written each grading period will be a year-long project.

8th grade Humanities

Eighth grade humanities is a block of English and Social Studies.  Each Wednesday, students attend an art class.  Mrs. Marvin, English, and Mr. Burch, social studies.  The English/Social Studies block uses the units of:

Exploration/Discovery, Colonization, Constitution, Westward Expansion, and the Civil War.  Both the historical and literary perspectives are covered, along with the necessary skills of reading, writing, and mechanics.  There is a great deal of discussion in these classes, along with many choices of assignments.  Many types of assessment tasks are used that include
writing, art, public speaking, etc.
