Recognizing Debra 'Deb' Woodward
Senior Applications Technician
MCCSC Information Services

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Debra "Deb" Woodward. Deb serves the Monroe County Community School Corporation as the Senior Applications Technician in the Information Services Department. She is nominated by her colleague, Donna Clemens, the secretary for Information Services and a former Faces of Education honoree.

Joining MCCSC in 1990, Deb began her career as the secretary for Binford Elementary School before transferring to the Information Services Department in 1998. Her current duties require her to be an instrumental part of the implementation and training of staff for all aspects of Skyward (the MCCSC database system). She is always willing to serve as a resource for information in that regard. Above that, her answers are delivered with a special blend of honesty, accuracy, kindness and humor.

Deb is truly a "go-to-person in the corporation," Donna said. She is in communication with Skyward staff, teachers and support staff employees, as well as school administrators on a daily basis. Deb also is responsible for submitting, and updating several Department of Education reports. The accuracy of this information requires constant collaboration. In addition, Deb keeps abreast of Skyward updates and is a member of the Skyward Steering Committee, comprised of 17 different school districts.

Deb's giving personality does not stop at 5 p.m., when her school day is done. If she hears of an employee going through trying times, she will be among the first to help and organize others to participate. She is also involved in Tri-Kappa, an Indiana philanthropic sorority. Deb and her sorority sisters have been strong advocates for education. As a result, MCCSC has been the recipient of several Tri-Kappa donations.

Moreover, Donna added that she stands amazed at how Deb manages to get everything done. "Deb's dedication to work and understanding personality has been a shining example for me and other employees to follow," she said.

Deb Woodward, your 19 years of service are greatly appreciated. Thank you for blazing a trail of kindness and generosity for all of MCCSC to follow. Congratulations!

[JR]
Recognizing John Holmes
Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach
Bloomington High School South

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is John "J.R." Holmes. J.R. serves as the Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach for Bloomington High School South. He is nominated this evening by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Human Resources Department.

With more than 600 wins to his credit, his career spans 39 years, including 12 years at Tunnelton and Mitchell as head coach. Proudly, J.R. has spent 27 of those years swathed in the purple as the Head Basketball Coach of the BHS South Panthers. His career as a coach boasts such accomplishments as ranking in the top ten for all-time wins for coaches in the state, which prompted the recent approval of the naming of the BHS South Basketball Court as the J.R. Holmes Court.

J.R. has devoted his career to mentoring student athletes. Memorably, this season will go down in history as a year that the community and schools truly came together to rally around the Panthers, spurring them on to become the 26-0, IHSAA Class 4A Boys Basketball State Champions. J.R. said he knew the community was invested by the time the Detroit Country Day game came. "It brought out the community and great support from people I had never seen before," he said. That level of support remained throughout the season, bringing out the biggest crowds in South history for the sectional, regional and state finals. "The team really appreciated all the purple in the stands," J.R. added.

For a coach, winning the state championship is beyond remarkable, but doing so undefeated is simply amazing. The 2009 South team was only the 12th team in state history to do so, which speaks volumes about its head coach. BHS South Principal Mark Fletcher paid tribute to J.R. most recently when he said, "Coach Holmes is a future Hall of Famer and a cornerstone of the strong tradition of excellence that Bloomington High School South is fortunate to possess." Being the great coach that he is, J.R. shares his credit with his players. "This is something that they will be remembered for forever!"

Coach J.R. Holmes, you too will be remembered forever for your high standards and passion for student athletics. We are proud to add this Faces of Education honor to your list of winning accomplishments. Congratulations!

[Twyla]
Recognizing Twyla Edwards
Secretary
Highland Park Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Twyla Edwards. Twyla serves as the secretary at Highland Park Elementary School. She is nominated by her Principal Jan Williamson and the Monroe County Human Resources Department.

Twyla began working for MCCSC in 1977-78 as the secretary to Corporation Counsel, and after some time, she then returned in 1995 as the secretary for Highland Park Elementary. In 2005, she also served briefly as the secretary to the Director of Human Resources during a transition period. "I will always be grateful to Twyla for sharing her time, talents and wisdom with the Human Resources Department. She is truly a hard worker and cares about any task that she undertakes. I appreciate Jan Williamson loaning her to us," Bev Smith, Assistant Director of Human Resources, said.

Without question, Twyla's heart is devoted to the elementary level and the students. Highland Park is definitely her home and the place where she shines. She is truly a self-starter and a "right arm" to her principal and a leader, whose attributes are too numerous to list. Mrs. Williamson shared that Twyla is an "outstanding office manager, who efficiently orchestrates many duties and responsibilities of a building that houses more than 450 individuals." Above that, Twyla is savvy with technology and always willing to share her knowledge with others, especially her fellow secretaries. She also is an invaluable source of information for both the faculty and parents, yet she fully understands the meaning of "confidentiality." Most importantly, you can always count Twyla to be kind and appropriate with students and be even tempered at ALL times.

Twyla Edwards, we are genuinely thankful for your presence and impact on the Highland Park Elementary School family. It is a pleasure to recognize you this evening and add your name to the growing list of Faces of Education honorees. Congratulations!

Recognizing Terry Ingram
Bookkeeper
Administration Building

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Terry Ingram. He is a Bookkeeper for the MCCSC Accounting Department. He is nominated by his supervisor and MCCSC Comptroller Tim Thrasher, who is also a former Faces recipient.

Terry has devoted his career to MCCSC, joining the school corporation in 1975. Celebrating 33 years, he first began working as a COE student while still in high school and earned a full-time position as a bookkeeper in 1977. His knowledge extends over a wide range of Business Office functions, and he goes the extra mile to share his knowledge with fellow staff members. Though he keeps very busy with his own job responsibilities, Terry finds the time to assist others, who are facing similar close time deadlines in their own positions. Terry's attention to details results in his work being exceptionally accurate, and he is blessed with the ability to work very rapidly and still produce very high quality work.

Mr. Thrasher shared that to know Terry is to understand that he is a true professional and a gentleman with a very keen wit. "His sense of humor helps keep the Business Office a pleasant place to work. He has a kind heart and a generous nature. His contributions to the Business Office and the MCCSC are very much appreciated," he said.

Terry Ingram, your length of service to our school corporation is admirable, and your professionalism makes you an asset to your department. We are pleased to honor you as one of our school corporation's bright Faces of Education. Congratulations!

[Royce]
Recognizing Royce Deckard
Wrestling Coach
Bloomington High School South

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Royce Deckard, wrestling coach for Bloomington High School South. He is nominated by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Human Resources Department. Similarly, he also earned a notable mention in the March/April 2009 edition of Indiana Alumni Magazine.

Also the director of budget and finance for Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, Royce has devoted 35 years to the sport of wrestling, having led teams to two state championships and individuals to 14 state championships. In honor of his commitment, he recently received the Distinguished Hoosier Award. The award is one of the highest given in the State of Indiana and is presented to those who have distinguished themselves by making exemplary contributions to their communities. City of Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan also supported the award when he declared Dec 9, 2008 as Royce Deckard Day.

Bloomington High School Principal Mark Fletcher shared that Royce is the "Real McCoy", a genuine talent and an outstanding individual. "Royce is the consummate professional. His dedication and commitment to excellence is second to none and a great example for all those with whom he comes into contact. We are most fortunate to have him represent our wrestling program and school. He is the real deal!"

Royce Deckard, your contributions to the sport of wrestling, your support of our student athletes and your respect for our community are undeniable. We are pleased to honor you as one of our school corporation's bright Faces of Education. Congratulations!

[Norma]
Recognizing Norma Owens
Custodian
Unionville Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Norma Owens, the custodial supervisor at Unionville Elementary School. She is nominated by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Human Resources Department.

A Unionville area resident, Norma began working from MCCSC 20 years ago on August 25, 1989 as a lunchroom/playground supervisor. She eventually moved from the lunchroom/playground to the kitchen, serving as a cook for five years. Norma shared that she remembered the days when Unionville served as a satellite kitchen to University Elementary School before the current building was operational. From cook, she moved to custodian, moving from a D-3 custodial position to a D-2 and finally a D-1 custodial supervisor when Pat Poling retired about 10 years ago.

Unionville is truly a community of neighbors and the school reflects that spirit. It is this fact that attracted Norma to the school 20 years ago, and it is what keeps her smiling through some pretty hard work every day. "I enjoy the kids and the great staff and the small community," she said upon learning of her Faces nomination. In fact, her children and grandchildren have all been fortunate enough to attend Unionville.

Norma, you should know that the feeling is mutual. The administration and staff at Unionville sing your praises. Principal Dave Marshall had this to say, "In addition to ensuring our school is always clean and well maintained, Norma demonstrates a genuine interest in the welfare of our students. Her devotion to Unionville Elementary is unbounded. She is the consummate custodian, a true pillar of the school." Unionville Secretary Sidney Ludwig also shared her thoughts:

"Norma has got to be one of the best custodians in the school corporation. We always receive compliments on the appearance of our school. Many visitors think our building is new! Norma is always willing to do whatever needs to be done without complaint or hesitation. We can always count on her. She rarely takes any time off and always comes to work with a smile and a great attitude. She is a great member of our team and we would be lost without her! Congratulations, Norma! We are proud that we have you at Unionville!"

Beyond her custodial duties, Norma also serves as the secretary for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3995. She was inspired to join AFSCME when her former supervisor shared the importance of joining such an organization. Norma continues to be excited about her involvement today. "It is important to be an AFSCME member and to have a say in the contract and the benefits we negotiate, and to have the right to have someone represent you when needed. I have been a member from the time I started to work for MCCSC. When I started, Pat Poling was a member and had us all to sign up, telling us how important it was. Then when I was ask to be an officer, I accepted and I have learned a lot in the last few years, being on several committees. I think everyone needs to be an AFSCME member," she shared.

Whether you are advocating for our support staff employees or supporting your Unionville family, Norma Owens, your efforts are laudable. Thank you for your years of service to our school community. It is with pride that the Board officially recognizes you as one of its shining Faces of Education. Congratulations!

Recognizing Jenny Noble-Kuchera
ESL Teacher
Binford Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Jenny Noble-Kuchera, English as a Second Language Teacher at Binford Elementary School. She is nominated by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Human Resources Department.

Energetically, Jenny began working from MCCSC five years ago in 2004 as an ESL teacher.

"This is my fifth year teaching, and my fifth year at MCCSC. It's all I've ever known," she said about her job most recently. Most of Jenny's experience has been at the K-6 level, starting at Childs Elementary before moving to Binford three years ago. However, she has worked with middle school students and our adult ESL community.

Her Principal Joe Childers describes Jenny as the "Binfordizer Bunny" because she just keeps going and going. "She moves up and down the hallway at the speed of light, transitioning quickly between one group of students and the next. She is so dedicated to the work at hand that I've even seen her eating her lunch while she is walking through the school on her way to meet her next group. She is enthusiastic and passionate about providing the best possible learning opportunities for her students. She's the first person to volunteer to help a colleague, and her sense of humor adds fun to everyone's day. Jenny makes our school a great place to learn and to work!"

Beyond her daily workload, Jenny also sits on several committees. She is the Binford representative for the Foundation of Monroe County Community School Corporation and the Human Understanding & Diversity Coach for her building, and works with the CHICS (healthy schools) committee. Jenny also founded and oversees the Partners Family Program for both Rogers and Binford. Whether in committee or classroom, her heart is with her students and families. She enjoys the "diversity of ages, abilities, languages, cultures, and experiences that they bring with them to our neck of the world."

Jenny also shares her success with her colleagues at Binford. Their professionalism and dedication to students and families helps make her job even more enjoyable. She jokingly said, "Wow! If 'they' ever try to move me away from Joe, Mark, Becky, Laura, Jennifer, and every classroom teacher I see every day in my travels down the hallways and across the parking lot, it'll be kicking and screaming. Hands down, the faculty and staff of Rogers/Binford are the most generous, committed, professional batch of people I've had the pleasure to work with."

Jenny Noble-Kuchera, your energy and spirit as well your appreciation for the diversity and uniqueness of our students are an asset to MCCSC. We are proud to recognize you this evening as one of our shining Faces of Education. Thank you and congratulations!

Recognizing Valerie Osborn
Manager, Daycare Center
Hoosier Hills Career Center

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Valerie Osborn, the Manager of the Hoosier Hills Daycare Center. She is nominated by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Human Resources Department.

Valerie, also known as "Val" to her friends and colleagues, has been a part of the MCCSC family for quite some time. She began her service to the School Corporation as a lunchroom/playground aide at Templeton Elementary School in 1996 and has served in several capacities since that time, including working in the School Age Care Program and as a literacy aide. During her employment, Valerie also devoted her time to her goal of becoming a licensed teacher, also doing her student teaching at Templeton. After obtaining her license, she took a position with the Headstart program before returning to MCCSC in 2007 to take on her current role as daycare manager.

"I truly enjoy this position. I get to teach and supervise. I work with young children, students and staff members. I am able to make some significant changes," Valerie said during her recent interview for Faces of Education. Each day, she manages planning the curriculum, supervising her staff of six people, scheduling, budgeting, monitoring the infant room, working with students, and balancing state compliance issues. Valerie agrees the HHCC Daycare Center is a "sleeper" hit, quietly making a growing name for itself in the Monroe County community and with parents. HHCC Daycare is cost effective and not just for MCCSC staffers. "We have one of the lowest price centers, which allow part-timers (partial day schedules), Valerie said. A diamond in the rough, HHCC Daycare also invests in its employees by offering benefits and training. This has allowed her to build longevity and consistency among her staff members, which is better for students and parents. "We have quality care open to the general public," she added.

HHCC Director Ed Brown is very proud of Valerie's performance and believes the daycare has flourished under her leadership. He offered these words:

"I first became acquainted with Val Osborn as a student in the Hoosier Hills Early Childhood Education program in the early 90's, attending from Edgewood High School. Val was a serious student in the program but had plans to go into law enforcement as a career. Several years later, her name appeared as an applicant for the Hoosier Hills Daycare Manager position. Through reading her application, I learned that Val had followed her high school education through to college and a baccalaureate degree in elementary education and an elementary teaching license. She was perfect for the job of managing the daycare center. Val is a very dedicated employee that has many responsibilities as the manager of a very involved business…including coordinating the center's activities with the Early Childhood Education high school teacher and her students. Most importantly, she assures that the children and parents are happy with the care provided. As you can see with her many hats she wears, Val is a hard worker. She goes about her work in a pleasant manner and is a true professional in all that she does. I am extremely happy for Val and her recognition for this most deserved award. Congratulations!"

[Tim]
Recognizing Tim Thrasher
Comptroller
Monroe County Community Schools

On this historic night in our nation, we also pause locally to recognize another great contributor inside of the Monroe County Community School Corporation family. Tonight, we honor MCCSC Comptroller Tim Thrasher as our Faces of Education recipient. He is nominated by former Board President Dr. Teresa Grossi.

Dr. Grossi said in her nomination of Tim, "There are so many people in our school district who work tirelessly, and although they should all be recognized, there is one individual, Tim Thrasher, who not only keeps students first, but keeps the district as a whole at the forefront of sound, stable, financial decision-making.

As a school board, there are two people who you rely on most, the superintendent and the chief financial officer. In the past several months as the board conducted the superintendent search and negotiations. We turned to Tim for guidance on policies and finances. He spent countless hours researching new laws, policies, sending e-mails and phone calls all the way through Christmas Eve to help us secure the contract with our new superintendent. His gentle, trustworthy guidance has aided the board of trustees and the district. Tim is a man of honor, a man of integrity and the rock for this school corporation."

Indeed a man of integrity, Tim joined MCCSC in 1972 as the Chief Accountant, and was promoted to Comptroller in 1990, a role he has prudently played since that time. As a response to his Faces nomination, Tim offered these words:

"The people I encounter at MCCSC every day make coming to work a pleasure. The staff members in the Business Office are exceptionally conscientious about their work and are supportive of each other and of me. The knowledge that our work contributes to the well-being of the staff and the education of our students is very rewarding. The opportunities to work with and interact with staff members in the Administration Center as well as from all over the school corporation cause me to want to come to work every day. During my 36 years with the MCCSC, I have been blessed to work with administrators and for Superintendents and School Board members, who have been very supportive and have treated staff members with respect, which has promoted a very positive work environment.

I feel very honored to receive the Faces of Education recognition and realize this recognition reflects the commitment to excellence of the entire Business Office staff. This recognition is accepted on their behalf as well as my own. Thank you very much!"

In order to truly understand Tim, you need only turn to some of his staff members to realize just what type of professional leader he is on a daily basis:

Helen Vaught, a former Faces honoree and long-time MCCSC employee, shared, "Tim has been one of the greatest people, along with Barb Buckner, that I have worked with. He has always been available to help whenever needed and will usually find the answers if he does not have them. I truly doubt that anyone that hasn't worked directly with him realizes the amount of responsibility that Tim has in order to keep this school system "afloat". He truly is a credit to Monroe County Community School Corporation and a dedicated employee. Congratulations, Old T, you really do have to "do everything."

Sharon Olson added, "Tim, has been the most knowledgeable supervisor that I have ever worked under, yet he doesn't intimidate any of his staff. Instead, he makes your questions come out to be a mutual discovery and you come away from his office feeling like you helped solve something! What a gift! Tim is considerate, tolerant, understanding, and has an incredible sense of humor. He puts in long hours and would never ask his staff to do something that he would not undertake. MCCSC is fortunate to have such a professional on their staff. I take pleasure in calling him my boss."

Marcia Rush, who serves as his secretary, candidly said, "I cannot say enough about Mr. Thrasher. Tim is the most caring and wonderful boss and just a wonderful person. Tim goes above and beyond his job with MCCSC. He is always there for you when you need to talk about something, or find out some information. Even when he is so busy with the budget, his door is always open. Tim cares about the students as well as fellow employees.

Whether you are part of Tim's staff, a member of the Board, a building/department leader, or a member of the public, you always know that you have received an honest, accurate guidance from the Comptroller's Office. Tim Thrasher, for your years of valiant service and unfailing support, it is our honor to recognize you as one of the most respected Faces of Education in our school community. Thank you and congratulations!

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is former MCCSC School Board Member Dr. Teresa Grossi. Dr. Grossi served as a board member from 2005 to 2009. During this time, she served as Vice President and President before her term recently came to an end. Tonight, she is nominated by the MCCSC School Board of Trustees for her leadership and support of education.

To know Dr. Grossi is to understand that she has been an avid supporter of our school community, especially special education. She is currently the Director of the Center on Community Living and Careers for the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, Bloomington. Several years ago, she and another colleague led our school corporation through a strategic plan for the Special Education Department. She also has given of her time (without compensation) for many years as a consultant in the arena of transition in Special Education.

Her dedication, knowledge and leadership skills served as a solid foundation for her when she joined the Board in 2005. She quickly became an asset and a voice of reason, helping steer the MCCSC through some challenging times of transition. Board Vice President Dr. Jeannine Butler shared her observations of Dr. Grossi's service, "As President, she has led the school corporation through many difficult times--the resignation of Jim Harvey early this past fall, the hiring of Dr. Hyland as our interim, the working with Ron Barnes and his company to do the superintendent search. Her leadership for the Board has been excellent and she has the respect of all of the Board members. She works very closely with all of us and also is in constant communication with the Superintendent (whoever that may be). She came on the Board to serve her community, and she has done that with the highest degree of dedication."

Board Member Jim Muehling remembers well joining the Board along with Dr. Grossi four years ago. "Dr. Grossi has been the 'poster child' for effective school board presidency! Her ability in keeping the Board focused, effective and on task has been laudable. During her term, the district has undergone major transitions which she has handled with grace, class and professionalism. The community owes her a debt of gratitude for the service and commitment she has provided, and I will particularly miss the fact that she was one of the few folks that gets my jokes."

Similar sentiments echoed from the Superintendent's Office. "I have had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Teresa Grossi in her capacity as Board President for the Monroe County Community Schools over the past four months. She has consistently demonstrated keen insight into the myriad of issues that confront today's modern school system. I believe she has been both a Board facilitator as well as a Board president. Finally, my tenure as interim superintendent has been, from my vantage point, fruitful and enjoyable in large part because of her skills," Dr. Timothy Hyland said.

Janet Tupper, the administrative assistant to the Superintendent and the Board, agreed. "How fortunate for the school system to have been the benefactor of Teresa Grossi's many talents these past four years. As a member of the Board of School Trustees, her commitment and professional leadership set a standard for all of us. We will miss her." While she has been a leader and light to us all, Dr. Grossi said the news of her Faces nomination was a pleasant surprise. However, it is a recognition that she chooses to share with the entire Board. She realizes that a team effort made her time as a member and officer that much more effective:

"This recognition needs to be shared with my fellow board members who have reminded me by their actions over the past 4 years, but especially this past year of their own dedication, commitment and passion for MCCSC. It made my role as board president so much easier. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as part of the Board of Trustees. But most importantly, it is every individual staff, teacher and administrator in MCCSC that reminds me why I chose to serve from the beginning. They are the heart of the MCCSC. It is their heart, passion, and commitment that continues to move MCCSC to excellence. I look forward to continuing my service to MCCSC in other ways."

Dr. Teresa Grossi, we are extremely proud to honor you this evening as part of our Faces of Education segment. You are a leader of the highest caliber, and your service to MCCSC has been exemplary in every way. As you segue from the School Board, know that you have been an inspiration to us all, and we look forward to working with you in other capacities.

[NiswanderMeyers]
Recognizing Gilbert "Gib" Niswander and Audrey Meyers
Supervising Foremen
MCCSC Transportation

Our Faces of Education honorees this evening are Gilbert “Gib” Niswander and Audrey Myers. Both employees work as Supervising Foremen in the MCCSC Transportation Department. The valued employees are nominated by their supervisor Mike Clark, MCCSC Director of Transportation.

Gib, who is a former police officer, joined the Transportation Department in 1988 as a school bus driver, and Audrey has been with the department since 2005, coming to MCCSC from the fuel industry. Both have been great assets since their arrival and both truly understand the nuances of the school bus industry. “They both know that we are here for kids and because of kids, we have jobs,” Mr. Clark said in his nomination.

“On a daily basis you can find Gib and Audrey answering the telephone, taking parental concerns, dispatching, assisting drivers with discipline and routing students on a daily basis. In terms of dedication, you could not ask for a better office staff. They are the first people to troubleshoot an issue before it becomes a problem, and you will find them staying late or picking up a bus route in a pinch until the last student is delivered safely home. They both arrive early and never hesitate to stay late. Transportation changes minute-by-minute, and they are always willing to do whatever needs to be done,” he added.

Like most Faces of Education nominees, Gib and Audrey do not seek attention or require reward. However, they are surprised and grateful to be recognized for their work. “We have an excellent team of administrators and staff in Transportation. While it is sometimes difficult to please everyone, we do strive to provide an excellent service for MCCSC. I am honored to be recognized for our efforts,” Gib said after finding out about the nomination. “I am honored to receive this award,” Audrey also commented.

Gilbert Niswander and Audrey Myers, we appreciate all of your work to keep our buses, drivers and students rolling safely to and from school on a daily basis. The Board of School Trustees is pleased to honor you and place you among its shining Faces of Education. Thank you!

[The Murrays]
Recognizing The Murrays
Patrick and Glenda

Community Supporters
Fairview Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honorees this evening are the Murrays. The Murrays, Patrick and Glenda, are long-time, generous supporters of Fairview Elementary School. The wonderful couple is nominated by Fairview Principal Karen Adams and Assistant Principal Trudy Litz.

“Patrick and Glenda Murray have been Fairview School’s guardian angels for many years. The Murrays have provided monthly gifts of support. Each year we have an author visit Fairview to talk with students about their books and what it means to be an author. The Murrays’ gifts help to purchase a book signed by the author for each student. Whenever support is needed, the Murrays respond – whether it be materials to open a much needed, new preschool room or attendance at a meeting (and there have been many these) to support Fairview. The Murrays have been there for us each and every time. We feel very fortunate to have them as our supporters – our guardian angels,” both administrators said in their joint nomination.

Staff members at Indiana University, the Murrays have been residents of the Prospect Hill neighborhood for the past 16 years and understand the value of Fairview to the neighborhood. “It is an important, integral part,” Patrick said during a brief interview for the Faces recognition. Glenda also shared that her memories of Fairview date back further than their residency in Prospect Hill. “My first experience with Fairview School was about 20 years ago, when the daughter of a friend invited me to talk to Mrs. Kemp’s class about downtown revitalization. The class was studying their community, and I was the Redevelopment Director at the City (Bloomington). It was a fun experience to interact with the class.”

The Murrays keep both Fairview and the Bloomington community close to their hearts. “Bloomington is a special place,” Patrick said. “We understand the trials and tribulations that many of the (Fairview) students face.” About 7-8 years ago, the couple decided to contribute funds regularly since they could not contribute as much time because of their work schedules. Leading by example, the Murrays’ support extends beyond the financial. “We were very involved in the meetings about Fairview’s future,” they said.

While the Murrays gladly continue to do their part for Fairview, they truly understand that the support of education is a community value, so Patrick and Glenda have issued the following challenge to us all:

“Thanks to Karen and Trudy for nominating us for this honor; we also encourage others to think about Fairview and do what they can to help. We were pleased (that) the Bloomington Rotary Club contributed funds this last year for the visiting author program.

Patrick and Glenda Murray, you are not only the guardian angels of Fairview Elementary School, but you are beacons of inspiration and motivation to us all. It is the Board of School Trustees’ pleasure to honor you as Faces of Education award recipients.

[Tackett]
Recognizing Randy Tackett
Custodian
Bloomington High School South

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Randy Tackett. He is a member of the Bloomington High School South custodial staff and a valued member of the MCCSC family. He is nominated by the MCCSC Human Resources Department for his role as a dedicated employee, his support of high school athletics and his dedication to the support staff employees he represents as president of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3995.

Randy or R.T., as his friends call him, proudly joined the South custodial staff on March 7, 1993. “I was looking for full-time employment. I started out cleaning classrooms and getting to know faculty and staff members,” he said during a recent conversation about his Faces nomination. Today, you will find him keeping the grounds for South, which entails everything from snow removal, to striping the athletic fields, to caring for the lawn.

It is through his work at South that he met Coach and Athletic Director J.R. Holmes, who gave R.T., the ultimate sports fan, a great opportunity. He became the manager for the basketball team in 1995, and a year later, he began doing the same for Panthers’ football. For R.T., who says he enjoys high school sports more than professional sports, the job is more than providing towels and water, it is about being able to provide encouragement and inspiration to the student athletes. He especially loves giving speeches to the students before the big games. Students take the game more seriously, he said. “I love watching the learning process and the competition.”

Bloomington High School South Principal Mark Fletcher has the highest regard for his staff member and sent the following words to honor him:

“R.T. embodies the spirit and enthusiasm of BHSS. He leads through example by always being positive, energetic, and displaying a “can do” attitude. Above all else, RT believes in kids and supports their efforts which is why he is one of the most well known and respected individuals in the entire school. Hey RT, here’s a big chest bump, high five and a “get off me Holmes” for all you do!”

In addition to helping students, R.T. also likes to help his fellow support staff employees. He has been the president of AFSCME Local 3995 for the past five years. “It has been a great, unique, an exciting experience,” he said. With AFSCME, R.T. said he not only helps his colleagues on the support staff side, but he also has had the opportunity to work with teachers, administrators, and principals.

The 15 plus years have flown quickly, but the goodness of the people makes it all worthwhile, R.T. said. “All of my experiences with MCCSC, I would not trade them for anything. It’s amazing how fast the 15 ½ years have rolled. I’m still awed by MCCSC. It’s just a fantastic place.”

Randy Tackett, we stand in awe of you as well. Your love for Bloomington High School South and the MCCSC community is amazing. We certainly believe in you, and the inspiration that you provide year after year to our students and your colleagues. Thank you very much!

[JaneGouker]
Recognizing Jane Gouker
Strings Teacher
Monroe County Community School Corporation

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Jane Gouker, who teaches strings at Tri-North and Jackson Creek Middle Schools as well as Bloomington High Schools North and South. Jane also coordinates the elementary school strings program, which currently has about 170 students enrolled. She is nominated by Asst. Superintendent for Human Resources and Personnel Peggy Chambers for her collaboration with the Human Resources and Transportation Departments to address not only rising transportation costs, but also contractual issues with the before-school-strings program.

Jane is in her 29th year with MCCSC and remembers the state of the strings program when she started in 1980. “It was at a stalemate,” Jane said humbly in a recent telephone interview concerning her Faces nomination. She knew then that she could not help build a successful program without a focus on cultivating talent at the elementary level, and she held her first fifth grade strings class that year. “Things started to grow so much,” she said. Today, students have a chance to experience strings in the fifth and sixth grade and continue on through middle school and high school.

With the growth of the program, it takes school and community support to keep it going smoothly. “I have a great help,” Jane says. She credits Dr. Alisa May at Indiana University and fellow teacher Julie Enzinger as well as many of the talent musicians in the community, who serve as instructors in the elementary program. “It takes being active and aware in the Bloomington community and (specifically) the music community.”

Coordinating a program also requires as much focus on the behind the scenes details as it does the music instruction. Each year, supporting the student enrollment process and selection of staff, sites changes, coordinating performances, and transportation of students are all par for the course, Jane shared. “I have seen all of that.”

Her love of the students and music help her transcend any of the challenges that may exist from time to time. In fact, Jane describes the strings program as a kinship. “It’s very much a family feel,” she said. “I love the kids. They have become like a family to me.” Jane shared that in some cases she has six to eight years to watch the students mature. “I watch these kids grow up just like a parent.” She also added that the unique, rich sound of the strings program comes from the student’s own love of music and their respect for each other. The students grow musically and push each other, which makes the entire program better.

As with other Faces nominees, Jane certainly doesn’t seek the spotlight and approaches tonight’s honor with a great deal of modesty. It is quite simply the sound of music that serves as her driving force. Perhaps, after 29 years of service, Jane’s own words say it best, “This is my passion.”

Jane Gouker, thank you for gifting us with your love of music and the passion to see our students soar musically. We are proud of your efforts to build a world-class strings program. Congratulations! The Board of School Trustees is pleased to recognize you as one of its shining Faces of Education.

[Henderson]
Recognizing Jeffry Henderson
Principal
Bloomington High School North

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Mr. Jeffry Henderson, who currently serves as the principal of Bloomington High School North. He has been the building leader there since 2005, and he is nominated this evening by Bloomington High School North Teacher and Publications Adviser Ryan Gunterman. In his nomination, Ryan submitted the following words to honor his principal:

“I cannot believe there is another administrator in this state who is more-deserving to serve as a “Face of Education” than Bloomington High School North Principal Jeffry Henderson. Jeff Henderson has provided the perfect atmosphere for student publications, and the journalists that produce them, to succeed. While some principals and superintendents tell the public that the First Amendment is valued and then restrict its practice within the halls of their schools, Jeff actually backs up his talk when it comes to student empowerment. He has made it very clear that the students are the ones dictating the direction of our school, and he has provided them every opportunity to fully participate in, and contribute to, the decisions affecting everyone within the building. That is why his support of the student journalists and their publication is far from surprising.

I am a lucky teacher. I know this. I hear of the stories of my colleagues from other districts who face constant opposition, and even harassment, from their building principals and/or district superintendents. I hope that I would be able to stand strong for my students and principles if such a situation were to ever occur here. However, I have never had to even consider it because of Jeff’s support for everyone’s First Amendment (rights). He has even gone on record in a First Amendment special edition of the newspaper saying “part of teaching responsible journalism requires that students be placed in positions of making decisions regarding the content of the student newspaper.”

He has also shown such support for this adviser’s career and well-being. Not only have I felt comfortable enough to discuss personal issues with Jeff, I know that I can count on him to listen to my questions and concerns about my career. The obvious example of this support is when I decided to apply for a professional leave to complete my master’s in journalism. While I was excited to get such an opportunity, I did not want to take a year hiatus from the student publications. So when I pitched the idea of doing a part-time leave where I would advise the publications first period and take classes during the rest of the day, Jeff showed nothing but support for my enthusiasm.

It’s support such as this that has allowed Bloomington North publications to reach the level of success it currently enjoys. And it’s that position that prevents me from thinking of a better candidate for the “Faces of Education” recognition.”

Mr. Henderson, we are indeed proud to recognize you for your ability to support the voices and aspirations of both your students and staff members. The Monroe County Community School Corporation is fortunate to have you as part of its leadership team. Thank you and congratulations!

[MathisThacker]
Recognizing Randy Thacker and Paul Mathis
Maintenance Workers
Extended Service Department

Our Faces of Education honorees this evening are Paul Mathis and Randy Thacker. Both gentlemen currently serve as part of the maintenance staff in the Extended Services Department. We recognize them for the role they played in bringing the 2007 Arlington Heights Elementary School Peace Mosaic display to life. They served as carpenters on the project, and are nominated by Arlington Principal Dr. Linda Black.

Last year, Arlington’s intermediate students embarked on a project with mosaic artist Lisa Hyatt. An avid supporter of our school corporation’s Human Understanding and Diversity efforts, Dr. Black, the staff and students wanted to produce a mosaic for the school related to the theme of “Peace.” Ms. Hyatt combined student designs to develop an outline or cartoon of the mosaic. “Our classes worked with the artist to place the tile pieces on a sheet of plywood.” Dr. Black said in her nomination. However, the glued tile still needed some work before it could be used as a display for the school, so she called the maintenance department. Before long, Paul and Randy arrived, walking around the project a couple of times to survey what needed to be done. They loaded the tile into their truck and took it off to their workshop. The finished piece returned grouted and framed beautifully. The Peace Mosaic now stands in the east wing of the school. “It makes a beautiful statement for our students and families,” Dr. Black also said. “We are very grateful for the efforts of the individuals, who helped us finish the project and display it at the school.” The mosaic has come to truly reflect the school’s vision for its students and families. The public is certainly invited to come and visit the display at any time.

As members of the Extended Services Department, Paul, who has been with the corporation since 1990, and Randy, who has been with MCCSC since 1987, certainly never anticipated an award for their work on the project. They viewed it as part of the work they do, and they were glad to help. “It’s our work,” Paul said. The day the gentlemen received word of their Faces nomination, they were hanging doors. From time to time, work like the Arlington project comes along to allow more of their creativity to be displayed, he said.

Paul Mathis and Randy Thacker, your handiwork on the Arlington mosaic is an example of the talent we have within our corporation and among our support staff. This mosaic would not have been complete without you. It is our pleasure to recognize your efforts and declare you our newest Faces of Education honorees. Thank you and congratulations!

[Sobrer]
Recognizing Francesca Sobrer
Theater Teacher
Bloomington High School North

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Francesca “Fresca” Sobrer. Francesca currently serves as the theater teacher at Bloomington High School North. She is nominated by her Principal Jeff Henderson.

Francesca started her career with MCCSC by doing her student teaching at Batchelor Middle School, afterwards becoming a full-fledged teacher with the school corporation in 1996. She taught at Tri-North Middle School and Bloomington High School South before joining the faculty at BHSN. “All of my teaching experience has been here (in MCCSC),” Francesca said proudly during a recent conversation about her nomination. “Most of my time has been at North.”

When she says “here,” Francesca literally means it. The hours of a theater/drama teacher are quite long as Mr. Henderson attested to in his nomination. “Teachers are a dedicated bunch, but those teachers who are involved in teaching courses in the performing arts spend countless hours outside the normal day helping to hone the skills of the students they have in class in preparation for public performances,” he said. Francesca continues to be a shining example of dedication. You see her students performing in the community, such as the “Living Statutes” project, featured at the Farmers Market, in addition to their annual productions at school. At any time, you can find Francesca or her students in rehearsal, building sets, making costumes, dealing with the challenges of performing copyrighted works as well as publicizing upcoming productions.

A loyal group of volunteers, community supporters, parents, and students alike, are all needed to make North’s Theater program the success that it is. Francesca’s ability to keep everyone motivated and focused on a common goal is simply remarkable, Mr. Henderson said. Her commitment has resulted in many of her students moving on to perform in community theaters, at the college level or professional theaters, what a tremendous compliment!

Recently, Francesca and her students were able to travel to Scotland to perform at the Fringe Festival. She supported the students as they wrote and produced an original play called, “Dust.” Mr. Henderson shared that the show was a rousing success. Performers from around the world marveled at the talent and maturity level of our students. The success in Scotland is a tribute to her expertise and her passion to continue creating opportunities in the performing arts for students.

Francesca Sobrer, thank you for imparting your talents to our students. Our theater community is grateful for your insight and dedication. Daily you provide a world class education to the students of Bloomington High School North. You are most deserving of being recognized as one of MCCSC’s Faces of Education honorees. Congratulations!

[Hunter]
Recognizing Melanie Hunter
Marketer and Public Relations Coordinator
Adult Education

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Melanie Hunter. Melanie currently serves as the Marketer and Public Relations Coordinator for Adult Education. Melanie also handles many of the graphics, layout, and media related special projects for the Monroe County Community School Corporation. She is nominated by Sherry Dick, the Director of the Broadview Learning Center, where Melanie’s office is housed.

Melanie has only been with MCCSC in this position for three years, but already she has become the “face” of public relations for Adult Education and other programs of the MCCSC. Melanie is tireless in sharing the good works and services of MCCSC through eye-catching materials and displays that she shares widely with our community. She can take an idea or need for publicity and turn it out into a creative, enticing marketing piece on a budget that would make even the most fiscally conservative school board member smile. If this dual, challenging role weren't enough to keep her schedule full, she also acts as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Adult Education program, a role that comes naturally to Melanie. It is not unusual to see her name on a list of volunteers for the many facets of programming. She has even recruited her husband to serve with her on a few occasions. Melanie's wit and word skill are famed around Broadview Learning Center. She crafts the messages that help bring in over 1,000 students a year to Adult Education, as well as all the promotional marketing she does for other programs in the MCCSC. Broadview Learning Center is her "home," and she values her role as a contributing team member. She has learned main office tasks well enough that she can cover for the secretary and does so, willingly, whenever there is a need. She feels that it gives her more authenticity, and knowledge to go out and market Broadview to the masses.

Melanie had this to say about her time at Broadview, "The thing is (and I probably shouldn't say this too loud) I just have a REALLY fun job. I get to go out and meet these neat people from all over the Corporation, and all over the community, and mingle with them: Students, potential students, teachers, staff, volunteers -- people who are really passionate or determined about improving their lives or the lives of others. Then I get to come back to my office and, well, play! Draw, take pictures, create posters, flyers, pamphlets, write stories, arrange photos, and use really cool computer programs to do all this. How can a person not enjoy such a job? And the people I work with....Wow!"

“Tonight's recognition and award will be a bit uncomfortable for her. But, she will find her comfort zone again tomorrow morning, hard at work, telling the world (check out our webpage on the Internet) and our community about the possibilities and potpourri of programming that make up the Monroe County Community School Corporation,” Sherry Dick, her supervisor, said.

Melanie Hunter, we think you are “neat” as well. We thank you for creatively sharing the message of Broadview and the MCCSC with our community. Your energy and talent are a unique gift. It is a pleasure to honor you as one of our Faces of Education. Congratulations!

[LarryAxsom]
Recognizing Larry Axsom
Mail Courier
Monroe County Community School Corporation

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Larry Axsom. Larry currently serves as the MCCSC Mail Courier. He assists with the delivery and coordination of the inner school mail system for all 25 building sites. Larry is nominated by our Superintendent James Harvey and Janet Tupper, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and Board of School Trustees.

He began working for MCCSC in September of 1971. His former positions included working at Bloomington South and the Service Building as a utility worker, but Larry is most widely and affectionately known our “mail man,” a job that he absolutely loves. Mr. Harvey and Janet had the following to say in their nomination:

Larry Axsom cheerfully goes about the business of delivering mail to all schools and buildings on a daily basis. Although he has a tight schedule, he takes time to greet employees at each site with a smile. His sense of humor is uplifting and he genuinely cares about people and our schools. Larry is the epitome of the mail carrier image. He is undaunted by heat, cold, rain and snow. He quietly picks up and delivers mail, boxes, special handling packages, and whatever else needs to be moved from building to building.

Of his nomination, Larry was very surprised and humbled. He would prefer not to draw attention or give credit to himself. Instead, he believes that working with his MCCSC comrades makes his job so enjoyable. “I appreciate the people. Everyone has just been great,” he said during a brief conversation about tonight’s recognition. “I especially want to thank everyone for showing me kindness some years ago when my wife passed away. That just shows you who your friends are.”

Truthfully, we are quite fortunate to have Larry as a friend and MCCSC family member. As Mr. Harvey says, “Larry is one of those people, who spread joy as part of his job. His dependability, loyalty, and caring about people are without measure. He helps many throughout the school corporation and is a vital link in our operation. Larry is one of our treasures.”

Larry Axsom, thank you for your hard work and your positive outlook. You not only take care of our mail delivery, but you take care of our hearts as well. For that, you are truly a Face of Education. Congratulations!

[Choonhyun]
Recognizing Choonhyun Jeon
ESL Coordinator
Monroe County Community School Corporation

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Choonhyun Jeon. Choonhyun currently serves as the English as a Second Language Coordinator for the school corporation. He assists ESL teachers and building administrators with the delivery of instruction and support services to students for whom English is a second language. He is nominated by the Human Resources Department, represented by Asst. Superintendent Peggy Chambers this evening.

Choonhyun began working for Monroe County Community School Corporation as an intern in the ESL Office in 2002, where he has served as a translator and interpreter. He has served as an outreach and data coordinator for the department as well, before taking on his current role three years ago. Choonhyun, who holds double bachelors’ degrees in International Business and Computer Science as well as a math minor, says he brings a lot of his own experiences to his job. A native of Korea, who has also lived in Japan for six years, he understands the many transitions that international families must face. “In addition, I have had plenty of time to work with families personally; I also can see a student’s progress through the data. This (current) job (ESL Coordinator) lets me bring my experiences all together,” Choonhyun said.

The ESL Program has grown tremendously over the years. “It is no longer just ESL instruction; it now includes support services,” he said. However, Choonhyun is very quick to share any credit with ESL teachers and principals. “The quality is all from the teachers,” he said. At the same time, the ESL Coordinator is firmly focused on the beginning of school and students. “There is a lot more to do.” Enrolling and assessing new students always accompanies the start of the school year. Another goal is to make sure that all ESL students, as well as their families, are well acclimated and feel comfortable within MCCSC. Choonhyun is currently working on plans for the Third Annual MCCSC International Family Day coming up on Aug. 23rd at Binford Elementary School. The event has grown every year in size and is an orientation for international families, who want to learn more about the school corporation. International Family Day features include community organization booths, a teen talk session, international cuisine, and information sessions for parents as well as interpreters. Thanks to the efforts of teachers and support services like International Family Day, ESL survey data shows that parents and students are more content in our school community than ever, Choonhyun said.

Looking forward, Choonhyun said this recognition leaves him nearly speechless. “I will use this as encouragement and will work even harder this year,” he said. While he is humble about his work, his supervisor Asst. Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Mary Lovejoy was pleased to have the opportunity to speak about the contributions of her staff member, “It took me little time to recognize how fortunate I am to work with Choonhyun. He is the consummate professional, working tirelessly to improve the instructional program for our ENL students and their families. The annual ENL Orientation Day held each year in August is one of the many examples of Choonhyun’s good work. He and several of our ENL teachers were invited to present at the 2007-2008 ENL Conference held in Indianapolis and our team was very well received. He is very deserving of being one of our Faces in Education, and I am honored to speak on his behalf.”

Choonhyun Jeon, you are an encouragement to all of us. Your commitment to diversity and our international families is an example to be emulated. The MCCSC Board of School Trustees is proud to recognize you as one of our shining Faces of Education. Thank you!

[BevElkins]
Recognizing Beverly Elkins
Secretary
Social Services Department

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Beverly Elkins. Beverly currently serves as the Secretary to the Social Services Department. She also filled in for the Administrative Assistant to Board of School Trustees for a brief period this summer. She is nominated for this honor by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees.

Beverly began her career with MCCSC in 1978 as a secretary at Bloomington High School North. Jim Harvey, our superintendent, was the principal, and MCCSC Board of School Trustees Vice President Jeannine “Doc” Butler was the dean of students and her immediate supervisor. Working at BHSN for eight years, Beverly stepped away from the school corporation for a four-year-period before returning to MCCSC in 1991. Since returning, she has worked as the Secretary to the Director of Transportation and now works in the Social Services Department, supporting her co-directors and 15 school social workers.

Beverly describes MCCSC as a great place to work, that has afforded her many advantages. For example, she had the opportunity to be off when her children were home for the summer. Conversely, when her children were older and finances became the priority, she took advantage of the opportunity to work year round. Today, she takes great pride in the efforts of the Social Services Department. More than 500 students received services in 2007-2008, and each of those requests received personal attention, Beverly said. She also was honored to work directly with the school board this summer. One of the perks was working with her formers supervisors from Bloomington North again.

No matter what her role during nearly her 30 years of service, Beverly has always put her best efforts forward. Her strong work ethic and compassion for people makes her beloved by those who know her both professionally and personally. Her Co-Directors of Social Services had this to say:

“It has been my honor to work with Bev Elkins over the past several years. Last year, in my new position as Co-Director of Social Services, Bev was an invaluable partner in terms of helping Pam and I with all the fine details of running our department efficiently,” Greg Marchant said. While Pam Lawrence Puls added, “Beverly is an invaluable member of our team, whose professionalism is never questioned. It is a real pleasure working with her.” Please know that both Pam and Greg send their regrets as they were unable to be present tonight.

Beverly also received kudos from her former boss Dr. Jeannine Butler, who shared, “Beverly Elkins first came to the MCCSC as a secretary who worked with me in my role as Dean of Students at North. She was extremely conscientious and competent and always went beyond the "call of duty" to assist me and keep the records and correspondence pertaining to student discipline correct and in order.”

Finally, on behalf of my fellow board members, I sincerely want to thank Beverly for her assistance this summer. She was gracious to help during a time when Janet (Tupper) was out, and interviewing new board candidates, a process that none of us had been through. Her kindness, calmness and willingness to do whatever needed to be done were greatly appreciated. I spoke with her often, and she always ended our conversation with: "What else can I do to help you?” She truly stepped up in a time of need and made sure things were running smoothly.

Beverly Elkins, we appreciate your years of service to MCCSC and going about your duties in calm, quiet, professional way. Your support of your colleagues and supervisors is to be commended. It is our pleasure to recognize you as one of our valued Faces of Education. Thank you!

[Dovenbarger]
Recognizing Kenneth “Kenny” Dovenbarger
Custodial Supervisor
Binford Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Kenneth “Kenny” Dovenbarger. Kenny was recently awarded the Custodial Supervisor position at Binford Elementary. Prior to this change of status, he served as the custodian for the Monroe County Community School Corporation Administration Building. He is nominated by John Carter and the Extended Services Department for his work in central office.

Kenny began his career with MCCSC in 2000 as a D-3 custodian at University Elementary School before joining the Administration Building family in 2005. He is excited to take on this next stage of his career as a supervisor. “When I was at University, I worked in the pre-school and kindergarten area. This is a chance to be around kids again,” Kenny said of his change. In fact, he is considering modifying his name to “Mr. D” because the students may struggle with his last name, D-O-V-E-N-B-A-R-G-E-R.

The staff at the Administration Building extends their thanks to Kenny for a job well done and wishes him well. Several staffers and administrators supplied statements in celebration of his efforts. They had the following words to share:

  • “Kenny has been a wonderful person to work with. He has a great attitude, a great sense of humor, and an easy way with people. He has helped make our building a good place,” Superintendent Jim Harvey said.
  • “I've always been told that when starting a new job, to make friends with the custodian and secretary first… Kenny was instantly on top of things in the tiny office. He hung my pictures, moved my clock--- twice, rearranged my furniture, watered my plants and uncomplainingly emptied my shredder! Best Wishes Kenny! You're one of a kind,” – Jan McCollough, Assistant Director of Special Education.
  • Literacy Coach Marilyn Schwartzkopf added, “Kenny, thanks for all the help carrying my presentation materials up and down the stairs many, many times. You are the best elevator the Admin Building has!!! I will really miss you,"
  • “It has always felt to me that Kenny takes his job as "custodian" very literally - he takes care of us here in the Administration Building. Binford is very lucky to have him on board,” Special Education Director Kathleen Hugo shared.
  • Administrative Assistant Janet Tupper expressed, “It would be difficult to write a job description for Kenny Dovenbarger's position at the Administration Center. He is our 'custodian' ...and that is true in the broadest sense of the word. He does the customary custodial work but goes beyond that. He also anticipates our needs and notices what might make life a little easier for others who work in our building, and he does it without fanfare; you may just notice some change suddenly appeared that smoothed the work flow. He pulls weeds outside, spreads mulch and even picks up walnuts - making sure that someone receives them already boxed. His positive attitude and genuine sense of caring make him a valued face of education.

Kenny Dovenbarger, it is clear to the Board of School Trustees and to anyone watching tonight that you are worthy of recognition. Thank you for always going the extra mile to take care of our buildings and our employees. We are pleased to honor you as our latest Face of Education. Good luck in your new role!

[FoodServ]
Recognizing The Food Services Department
MCCSC

Our Faces of Education segment is particularly special this evening because we are taking the time to honor the recent efforts of the Monroe County Community School Corporation Food Services Department. The department is nominated by MCCSC School Board Member, Sue Wanzer.

Under the leadership of Food Services Director Hattie “Lou” Johnson, the department came to the rescue of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank on June 5th when freezers went down at Sam’s Club due to a power outage. Sam’s was prepared to donate the food to the Food Bank, but the lack of storage forced the staff to seek other storage venues. Linda Hobbs, MCCSC Food Services Assistant, recalled the moment clearly. “I remember the day because we were in training,” she said. However, there was never a question about helping; the department was more than willing to share its freezer space and staff resources. Both Lou and Linda worked their cell phones during their training session that day to make it possible.

Grandview was chosen as the storage site, and Food Services Delivery Driver Nathan Covey was at the ready to transport food as necessary. Nathan was very gracious with his time, Lou said. He was prepared to “clock out” for the day, but remained on duty to make sure the Food Bank got the help it needed. Grandview Food Services Supervisor Gina Arthur also came in from Bedford to open the kitchen and organize the freezer to accommodate the extra skids of food. She also returned on June 11th to be present when the Food Bank returned to pick up the food.

Sue Wanzer congratulated the Food Services team for a job well done in her nomination. “The staff made a wonderful contribution to our community....Nice job,” she said. Julio Alonso, Executive Director of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, also had this to say, “MCCSC was very helpful. Hattie (Lou) arranged for us to store food at Grandview School, and Gina came in from home in Bedford to meet us there. Everyone we worked with was great and very helpful, lifesavers actually!!”

Therefore, the MCCSC Board of School Trustees is pleased to honor our Food Services Department for its quick response and being such a great friend to our partners. Thank you all for such a display of community spirit! Thank you.

[BetsyWalsh]
Recognizing Betsy Walsh
Interim Principal
Grandview Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Betsy Walsh. Betsy is a retired MCCSC counselor and elementary principal. She is currently serving as the interim principal at Grandview Elementary School. She is nominated by the MCCSC Human Resources Department, represented this evening by Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Personnel Peggy Chambers.

Betsy began her career with Monroe County Community School Corporation in the fall of 1977 as a counselor at University Middle School. After which, she worked for four years as a counselor for the Area Vocational program, serving both Bloomington High Schools North and South. Betsy also served one year as an assistant principal at Binford Middle School, before it was converted into an elementary in 1984. In that same year, she was named principal there and served in that leadership role until her retirement in 2002.

Retirement certainly has not diminished Betsy's service to MCCSC. Interestingly enough, she has returned to the corporation to take on seven, part-time opportunities as interim principal since 2002. She has readily taken on three temporary placements at Rogers as well as tours of duty at Highland Park, Clear Creek, Grandview and Batchelor Middle School. With each placement, she has provided our students and staff members with the dignity, wisdom, stability and leadership needed during times of transition.

In preparation for this honor, two individuals provided statements regarding Betsy's career and her support of MCCSC. The first is MCCSC Superintendent Jim Harvey who said, "Betsy Walsh's service as principal at Binford Elementary School for almost 20 years was a distinguished capstone to her career as an educator in the MCCSC. Her wonderful compassion for people whether they were students, parents, or staff endeared her to those with whom she worked. Her professionalism within the school corporation and across the state was at the highest level. She is highly valued by her peers. Betsy has given us her best. This recognition is one small way of saying "thank you." Also, Grandview Assistant Principal Lily Albright willingly shared the following sentiment: "I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Betsy. She leads with a sense of honesty, hard work, and integrity that I hope to emulate one day. I am overwhelmed when I think about the number of lives Betsy has touched and am grateful that Grandview's 550+ kids and 70+ adults are among them."

Betsy recently shared with the MCCSC Human Resources Department that she enjoyed each of her returns to building leadership. It has allowed her to give back as well as a chance to stay current on educational issues. "It reminds me of how wonderful public education is. Public education within MCCSC is outstanding. The teachers work hard. The secretaries, bus drivers, cooks…everyone cares about kids," she said.

Betsy Walsh, you too are outstanding! Your continued contributions to MCCSC are truly inspirational and very much valued. We, the Board of School Trustees, are proud to recognize you as a one of our shining Faces of Education. Thank you for all that you have done to support our staff members, families and students.

[KathyChitwoodDianeJackson]
Recognizing Kathy Chitwood & Diane Jackson
Food Services
Bloomington High School South

Our Faces of Education honorees this evening are Kathy Chitwood and Diane Jackson. Both ladies serve as Food Service Supervisor and Assistant Food Service Supervisor, respectively, in the cafeteria at Bloomington High School South. They are nominated by their colleague, Lori Miller, who works on Food Service staff at the BHSS.

Kathy joined MCCSC Food Services in 1996, while Diane was hired in 2000. Today, they head up a team that serves nearly 1,800 meals to students and staff on a daily basis. Running such a large operation in a compressed timeframe requires a lot of teamwork, and Kathy and Diane compliment each other well, Lori Miller said in her nomination. "She (Kathy) is always willing to teach us all aspects of the kitchen; she never gets tired of us asking questions and always wants us to continually learn." Lori also went on to describe her assistant supervisor's role in the kitchen. "Diane is a very caring and compassionate worker…She comes along side of Kathy and helps oversee the running of the kitchen."

Both ladies take pride in the quality of their work. Each day, you will find Kathy and Diane making sure that each line has well-balanced meals with plenty of extra options for the students. Behind the scenes, they run an effective operation as they have adopted a teach-while-doing philosophy. You will never find the team leaders asking their staff members to something that they are not willing to do themselves, especially if the kitchen is short staffed on a particular day.

In addition to leading a team, Kathy and Diane have individual duties they must accomplish to keep the kitchen running smoothly. Ordering of food, applying money to accounts and closing the kitchen every day are just a few of Kathy's managerial duties, while Diane handles the gathering of left over food for the food bank and organizes all of the recycling for South's cafeteria.

Most importantly, both leaders have a passion for students. Neither likes to see a student leave the cafeteria without his/her needs met, Lori Miller further said in her nomination. They take the time to encourage students, and feel that no child should be hungry. If a student misses the customary lunch period, Kathy and Diane share the same approach. Feed 'um!

With such a formula for success, Lori and the rest of her colleagues could scarcely imagine a work setting without two such hard working and caring supervisors. "Without Kathy's direction it would be very difficult to provide for the daily needs of the students…, and as you can tell, Diane is a very important partner in providing for the needs of the students, but also for the needs of the community as well as the earth in the recycling area."

Kathy Chitwood and Diane Jackson, the MCCSC Board of School Trustees applauds your work ethic and your commitment to supporting our students, nutritionally and emotionally. We are proud to honor you both as two of our shining Faces of Education for the 2007-2008 school year. Congratulations!

[JeanetteBrown]
Recognizing Jeanette Brown
Health Aide
Arlington Heights Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Jeanette Brown. She serves students and parents as the health aide for Arlington Elementary School, and she is nominated by MCCSC Nurse Molly Black.

Jeanette joined the Monroe County Community School Corporation as an employee in 2001 after volunteering at Arlington in the lunch room and with the reading club. "These are perfect hours for a mom with three children," she said. Above that, it was the idea of working in an educational setting that hooked her, first working as a Class Size Aide and then an Inclusion Aide. "You get to work hands-on with kids. I now have teaching and learning strategies on how to work with my own kids," Jeanette also shared after learning of her nomination for Faces. When she learned of the health aide position, she found it a challenge to leave the classroom, but she knew she wanted a full-time position. Soon, Jeanette found her new job to be equally as rewarding. "I love the kids here," she said. "You see a lot of kids who need that extra love and attention."

However, being a health aide is not all band aids and hugs. It is an awesome responsibility, and Jeanette takes very seriously. The health needs of students have become increasingly more complex. On a daily basis, she wisely works with numerous students, who have issues like diabetes, asthma, and allergies in addition to the bumps, scrapes and bruises that pop up at a moments notice. "I keep track and know each student," she said of the recordkeeping requirements associated with her job. "It makes me think of each child individually."

Jeanette's roll-up-your-sleeves approach to her job has made her a vital part of the Arlington family. In addition to her daily duties, you very well may see her on bus duty, in the lunchroom, staffing the desk in the office, or on the playground. Her love and dedication to Arlington shines through loud and clear. As a result, her colleagues and supervisors speak very highly of her. Nurse Molly Black shared in her nomination that Jeanette gives "110% on a daily basis!" Arlington Principal Dr. Linda Black offered these words, "Jeanette is a wonderful member of the staff, and it is great to celebrate her contribution." And Debbie Quimby, MCCSC Director of Health Services, warmly responded to Jeanette's nomination by saying, "She is more than deserving."

Jeanette Brown, the MCCSC Board of School Trustees is honored to learn of your valuable contribution to Arlington Elementary School and the MCCSC. It is a pleasure to recognize you as one of our shining Faces of Education. Thank you!

[ConnieHall]
Recognizing Connie Hall
Guidance Secretary
Bloomington High School South

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Connie Hall. She currently works as the guidance secretary for Bloomington High School South, and she is nominated by BHSS Guidance Counselor, Roger Perry.

When Connie graduated from Bloomington High School South in 1967, she would not have predicted that she eventually would return to her high school to continue her career. "I worked somewhere else for 10 years," she said. "I started at South on Oct. 30, 1978. This year will be my 30th." Without question, Connie has been the bedrock of the guidance department. "I have been fortunate to work with her for 14 or 15 years," Roger Perry said. During that time, people have come and gone, but Connie has remained as the constant, he said. Above that, Connie has an excellent rapport with parents, students and teachers, and she has the ability to bring people together. "She makes others comfortable; she is a bridge," Mr. Perry further shared of his nomination.

Connie shared that she likes coming to work on a daily basis. "The counselors are great to work with, and interaction with kids, I enjoy that a lot," she said. Thirty years have brought about a lot of changes, mostly in computers and technology, but students over time are quite the same, Connie quipped. "They are still just kids."

In her reflections about her career, Connie was truly surprised by the news of tonight's honor, stating that she is most proud of the relationships that she has established. "I am happy with the friendships I have made over the years," she said.

Connie Hall, your dedication to Bloomington High School South and our students has made you more than deserving of recognition. Therefore, the Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees is proud to name you as one of its shining Faces of Education. Thank you for all that you do to enhance our school community.

[Donna Clemens]
Recognizing Donna Clemens
Secretary
Department of Information Services

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Donna Clemens. She currently serves as the secretary for the Information Services Department, and she is nominated by her colleague, Deb Woodward, who said, "Donna has a strong work ethic and sets the bar high for the tasks she is assigned. When given a job to do, she stays focused and on-task until completed. You can count on Donna to complete the assignment on time, meticulously, having double and sometimes triple checked for errors."

It is with this strong sense of determination that Donna joined MCCSC in 1993 as a teacher's aide in the auto tech class at Hoosier Hills Career Center. She had originally applied to be an aide in the drafting class because of her background with CAD (Computer Applied Design.) However, when the auto tech position came along, she willingly accepted. "They assured me that I did not have to know anything about automobiles," she joked when she learned of her Faces nomination. In 2005, Donna was able to put her computer skills to further use when she joined the Information Services team.

In addition to her projects, one of her main functions is to answer the many calls that come into the IS department. According to her nominator Deb Woodward, callers are often upset, frustrated, hysterical, confused, irritated, and sometimes just looking for someone to listen. "My son tells me, 'mom, you always have on rosy, red glasses'," Donna said of her life philosophy. "I look at everyday as if it is going to be a good day. I do not look at it like a burden. I enjoy helping people." And helps she does, her colleagues say. Donna not only listens, but she asks pertinent questions to help diagnose the problem. No matter what the issue, she will attempt to find an answer, and she does so with a cheerful attitude.

Donna Clemens, you are indeed an asset to your department and to the school corporation. Therefore, the MCCSC Board of School Trustees is honored to recognize you as one of its shining Faces of Education. Thank you for all of your efforts. Congratulations!

[Denise Hill]
Recognizing Denise Hill
Media Specialist
Tri-North Middle School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Denise Hill. She serves our school corporation as the Media Specialist at Tri-North Middle School, and she is nominated by her Principal Dr. Gale Hill, who said, “Our library is truly the hub of our school. Students and teachers, alike, use it to its fullest and consider it a top "learning environment."

The staff at Tri-North believes the credit for the media center's success can be directly attributed to Denise, who always approaches her job with a spirit of excellence. "Denise is the consummate middle school librarian," Dr. Hill also said in her nomination. "She is eager to help teachers make full use of the library and is tireless in her ability to make the library, our computer labs and herself available."

Denise joined the MCCSC in 1977 after teaching fourth grade for three years in her hometown of Huntington, IN. Denise's first assignment was at Binford Middle School, where she served until 1984 when Tri-North opened. "I've been here ever since," she said. Denise acknowledges that she has seen many changes. She remembers 16 mm film projectors, card files, and the buzz surrounding the first VCRs and the first automated circulation system. Now in the midst of the digital era, Denise says her philosophy remains the same. She looks at each student as an individual, and she views each opportunity to work with teachers as a collaborative effort. "I have a belief that reading is the key to success in life."

When notified about tonight's recognition, Denise shared that she was honored and humbled, quickly sharing credit with her own parents and her fellow media specialists. "I try to do whatever I can to help," she shared. Her love for her school and her students also was very apparent. "Tri-North is truly a family. There are never two days that are the same, and I enjoy the energy, the enthusiasm of middle schoolers, and the growth they exhibit at this age, she added.

Tonight it is the MCCSC Board of School Trustees' pleasure to share in that energy and enthusiasm. Denise Hill, you are truly an example of what is finest about the profession of teaching and our school corporation. We are proud to recognize you as one of our shining Faces of Education. Congratulations!

[Tina Peterson]
Recognizing Tina Peterson
Executive Director
Foundation of Monroe County Schools

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Tina Peterson. She serves our school corporation as the Executive Director of the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools, and she is nominated by MCCSC Media Specialist and FMCCS Building Representative Verna DeLuce, who said, “I feel Tina deserves this award for her dedication to her position. She has increased our funding significantly during her tenure, and she has developed different kinds of grants to fit specific areas of need within the corporation.

The FMCCS awarded its first grants in 1976 and is expected to exceed $ 1 million dollars in cumulative funding to the school corporation this school year. This remarkable level of expansion and attainment in recent years is due to the vision, leadership and community partnership that Tina inspires. From vision screenings to Bradford Woods scholarships, to the FMCCS Science Initiative, to health and fitness initiatives, to grants for professional development or engaging the community in a conversation around 21st Century Education, Tina has helped shape our community’s support of education. Verna added in her nomination, “I have worked with Tina for several years now on each grant cycle. She is always prepared, patient and yet diligent in our meetings. These are, by nature, long and tedious meetings as we determine which requests are awarded the monies. I have never seen her lose her temper; rather she continues to keep us on task, guiding us toward completion…”

Tina has also demonstrated that giving to education can be fun and filled with elegance, grace and style. One need not look any farther than FMCCS New Year’s Eve Gala for an example. Tina created the fundraiser approximately four years ago, and it grows in support, beauty and scope with each passing event. The gala is described as “breathtaking,” “energizing,” and “glamorous.” “It appears that she spares no expense to make this a memorable event for all attendees,” Verna said. However, we all know that an enormous amount of work and partnership helped make the gala the special success that it has become.

Tina, your dedication to the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools has truly deepened the bond between Monroe County and its schools. You have expanded our definitions of generosity and philanthropy. The MCCSC Board of School Trustees is honored by your commitment. Therefore, it is our pleasure to recognize you as one of our shining Faces of Education. Thank you for your dedication to education and our school community.

[Charlie Hawk]
Recognizing Charlie Hawk
Literacy Group Facilitator
Clear Creek Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honoree this evening is Charles Hawk. Charlie, as he is most commonly known, is part of the support staff of Clear Creek Elementary School. He is nominated by Principal Tammy Miller and Assistant Principal Sasha Davis. Of his nomination, Mrs. Miller said, "We can not imagine him not being here. He is very well respected. It would be very empty at Clear Creek without him."

After retiring from Shields & Trinkle, Charlie began working with Clear Creek in 1994 as a playground aide, going full-time in 1996. His desire was to remain active during his retirement. "I started out part-time and just took on more and more," Charlie said when notified of his Faces of Education nomination. Today, he supervises the daily happenings in the lunchroom and serves students as a literacy group facilitator. Staff members at Clear Creek describe him as "wonderful" and "the grandfather of the school." One of Clear Creek secretaries, Patti Wheeler, described him as one of the people, who taught her son in literacy lab during his primary years. Today, having attended Clear Creek K-6, her son remembers that Mr. Hawk helped give him confidence as a reader. "When you say, 'Mr. Hawk', everyone knows who you are talking about. All of the students light up when they see him," she said.

Charlie said the students and staff are equally as wonderful. He believes the students keep him young, and helping them learn to read is thrilling. "You can see the change in their eyes when they really get it," he says. In addition, Charlie also enjoys helping the students during bus duty. He has the opportunity to start the day and end the day with them.

Above all, Charlie has always been a supporter of education. A one time elementary education major himself, he served as a Monroe County Community School Corporation School Board Member from September 1976 to December 1984.

With such an impressive record of service to Clear Creek and our school community, it is the School Board's pleasure to recognize Mr. Charles Hawk as one of our school corporation's shining Faces of Education.

[Carl and Diane Miller]
Recognizing Carl and Diane Miller
Parent Volunteers
University Elementary School

Our Faces of Education honorees this evening are Carl and Diane Miller. The husband and wife duo are parent volunteers at University Elementary School. They are nominated by Paris King, one of our U-School secretaries. "They are absolutely amazing volunteers," Paris said of her nomination. "I wish I could say enough about them."

The Millers began volunteering about four years ago, when their son was in first grade. "If there is a way to make a difference, we want to do so," Diane said. Both she and her husband realize the overwhelming responsibilities that teachers and schools face everyday. As a result, the Millers work in the school Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. They take on any task asked of them. You will find them working in the library, the classroom, or the office. No job is too big or small. The couple also helps develop and maintain the school website. In addition, Carl is quite an artist and creates some very "amazing" bulletin boards around the school. "They have devoted themselves to our school," Paris added in her nomination. "They are wonderful people."

University School Principal Dr. Janice Bizzari was thrilled that the Millers were selected for Faces of Education. She recalled, with a chuckle, that recently, the staff joked, while Carl was filling in on the switchboard, about what they would do without them. The real truth is that: the Millers have become such a part of the University School family that their impact will be felt for years to come. "This is a wonderful recognition," Dr. Bizzari said.

We, the MCCSC School Board of Trustees, could not agree more. Therefore, we are pleased to recognize Carl and Diane Miller for sharing their time and talent with our schools. Congratulations!

[Carl
Zager]
Recognizing Carl Zager
Instructional Technology Coordinator
Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
Abel Building

Our Faces of Education honoree is Instructional Technology Coordinator Carl Zager. He is nominated by Media Specialist Verna DeLuce, who stated, "Carl is one of our trusty servants, who deserves to be recognized for a life of faithful service to MCCSC."

His contributions to the School Corporation include more than 40 years of teaching experience, with 20 of those years being spent at Batchelor Middle School. In the mid- nineties, Carl joined the Information Services team, turning his computer skills and talents into an invaluable resource. For countless MCCSC employees, he is one of the "calm" voices on the other end of the telephone at the Abel Building.

"Many times, as a librarian, Carl has had to pull me off the edge with a solution to a problem he has talked me through over the telephone," Verna further stated in her nomination. He is extremely knowledgeable, yet he is never afraid to admit when he does not know the answer to your question. Most importantly, Carl is always willing to go the distance to help teachers and employees find the answers.

In addition to his teaching and technology skills, he is a concerned leader. Carl served for many years as MCEA (teachers union) president. The position remains very labor intensive, with many meetings and contract negotiations. "He was president during the time BEFORE the position was granted release time, so he has served us well in that capacity also," Verna added.

Above his many roles, projects and duties, Carl always brings a sense of humor and a smile to work. His love of conversation is a gift that disarms the most stressful situations. He is a great ambassador for MCCSC, who is always pleasant to encounter. Therefore, it is the School Board's pleasure to recognize Carl Zager as one of our shining Faces of Education.

[Terri Burks]
Recognizing Terri Burks
Secretary, Literacy Services
Administration Building

Our first Faces of Education honoree of 2008 is Terri Burks. She is the secretary to the Literacy Services Department, and she is nominated by the Director of Literacy Services, Cathy Diersing. In addition, each member of the Literacy Services staff took time to send in a nomination form celebrating Terri's work and accomplishments as well.

Of her work, Mrs. Diersing said, "I can not possibly say enough about the amazing work that Terri Burks contributes in her role with Literacy Services." Terri is viewed by her colleagues as vital team member, who works with "competence" and "confidence." Her duties include managing her portion of the Title I grants, state reports, summer school and other basic elements of her position. However, one can often find Terri going above her basic duties when she coordinates professional development efforts or supports schools in meeting specific needs. Specifically, she is noted for her work with the Reader's and Writer's Workshop professional development opportunities and the implementation of the Read 180 program for year two.

Her colleagues on the Literacy Services staff affectionately call Terri their "ROCK!" She knows the answer for nearly everything, and if she doesn't know, she will find out," the staff says. Above that, she challenges herself in her own growth by setting high goals, yet she always sees and accepts the best in others. "

Terri also is described as a delight to work with on daily basis. "She never loses focus on why we are here and the reasons we do the work we do. Terri knows that every decision we make, every dollar we spend, every professional development opportunity we coordinate is based on what is best for children," Mrs. Diersing further shared in her nomination. Most importantly, all that Terri does is done with a "smile" and "graciousness."

[Terry Daugherty]
Recognizing Terry Daugherty
Science Teacher
Batchelor Middle School

Tonight's Faces of Education is Batchelor Middle School Science Teacher Terry Daugherty. He is nominated by his colleague and fellow Batchelor Teacher Sharon Finley. She wrote in her nomination: "I can think of no other educator who is more devoted to the development of quality education for the children of Monroe County."

Terry is a master teacher with 37 years of teaching experience to his credit, yet he always seeks to improve his own practices. This continuous commitment to learning can be felt in his classroom as he uses best practices to inspire his students to explore the world around them. Not only does he use a hands-on approach to engage students, but his "caring and compassionate nature" also allows him to have excellent rapport with students.

Extending beyond the classroom, Terry is not content to solely improve his practice, but he always shares his knowledge with his colleagues. He is viewed as a leader in his home school, serving on the School Improvement Team and the School Climate Committee. He also is the technical coordinator and the MCEA representative for the building.

Terry's educational philosophy and professional wisdom are often called upon at the district, state and national level. He serves on the Middle School Task Force and the Professional Development Committee for MCCSC, and he is a long-time member of the HASTI, a state science association, presenting at state conferences. He also is a member of the National School Reform Faculty and a national facilitator. During his time as an educator, Terry certainly has served as a mentor to many and is now involved in mentorship training. In addition, he has worked with the New to MCCSC Teachers Orientation process for the past several years to assist new teachers in the development of classroom management skills.

[Cheryl Fell]
Recognizing Cheryl Fell
Parent Volunteer
Bloomington High School South

It is our pleasure to honor Cheryl Fell, a parent and volunteer at Bloomington High School South. She is nominated by BHSS Assistant Principal Joe Doyle. Cheryl is the first volunteer to be recognized by the Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees during the Faces of Education portion of the board meeting.

For about five years, Cheryl has given of her time, energy and talents to the students and school community of South High School. Not only is she a proud mom to two "great" kids, she is willing to support a team, host a pre-dance dinner or a Halo sleepover at any time. Most notably, the South family and the MCCSC community know her for her work with Hoosiers Outrun Cancer. Cheryl is a cancer survivor herself and works with "tireless enthusiasm" to make Hoosiers Outrun Cancer an event to look forward to each year.

Mr. Doyle describes her creativity and coordination as nothing short of "awesome!" Additionally, he said, "she is a vital member of the South community, and the more than 1,500 participants from South have a positive experience about how to live with cancer because of Cheryl."

When she was notified of her upcoming Faces of Education recognition, Cheryl was literally speechless because she considers herself a "behind-the-scenes" person. However, tonight, we are proud to shine a little light her way. Cheryl Fell, you are a wonderful example of just how important parents are in the support of the education process. Your humility, your perseverance and spirit as well as your volunteer efforts are an inspiration to us all. The Board of School Trustees recognizes you as one of our Faces of Education. Thank you!

[Herman Serfling]
Recognizing Hermann Serfling
Culinary Arts and Baking Teacher
Hoosier Hills Career Center

Tonight's honoree is Hermann Serfling, Culinary Arts and Baking Teacher at Hoosier Hills Career Center. He is nominated by Brenda Dorsett, who serves as an aide in the culinary program. She wrote in her nomination: "I have worked for Mr. Serfling for three years. He is a very compassionate and understanding person. He works great with students, and they have the highest regards for his leadership. It is so pleasant to hear him guiding students on how to do their assignments."

Joining the Hoosier Hills staff in 2003, Hermann's background made him the right person for the students and the Culinary Arts and Baking program. "He has brought a more featured restaurant approach, HHCC Director Ed Brown said. "His classes are very participatory." Teamwork is emphasized, which is very important in the restaurant and food service industry. Through his work, Hermann is able to share practical lessons gleaned from his training in culinary school. He also has worked in Lake Tahoe and Switzerland. The students are able to learn everything from safety and sanitation to service to preparation and presentation. Hermann ensures that his students receive both "front-of-the-house" and "back-of-the-house" experiences.

A student recently stopped Ed Brown to let him know that he was going pursue a career in culinary arts, and he shared that Hermann's class was the best instruction he had ever received. "He said the class really made a difference in his life."

Hermann Serfling, your ability to make a difference is encouraging. The Board of School Trustees salutes you as one our shining Faces of Education. Thank you for all that you do for our students and our schools.

[David Tague]
Recognizing David Tague
Custodial Supervisor
Jackson Creek Middle School

Tonight's honoree is Jackson Creek Middle School Custodial Supervisor David Tague. He was nominated by his colleague JCMS Media Specialist Kris McGlaun.

David began his career with the Monroe County Community School Corporation nearly sixteen (16) years ago as a custodian. "I started out at the low end," he said of his start with MCCSC and working his way up the ladder. He is equally as humble when he speaks of his success in his present position and quickly gives credit to the "team" spirit that exists at Jackson Creek.

In his nomination, David is said to go "above and beyond," providing assistance to anyone who needs it. Jackson Creek is a 10-year-old facility that continues to look new because of the efforts of David and his staff. The administrators at Jackson Creek also were very supportive of his nomination. "Dave Tague is a professional that takes his job very seriously. He is an exceptional leader of his staff and in my opinion is a role model for what a head custodian should be," JCMS Principal Donna Noble said.

Assistant Principal Shannon Carroll-Frey shared that David always puts others first. "Dave responds with humor and speed to assist others, whether it is an art teacher who needs more paper towels, a special needs student, who has just his flushed socks, a representative of Banneker Basketball who wants to store their equipment for the Saturday youth basketball league, or an administrator, who needs to hang the new class picture."

Dave Pillar, who currently in his first year as an assistant principal at JCMS, said David made him feel welcome from day one. "Dave is a leader and a team player. I am privileged to have the opportunity to work with him.

David Tague, your work and leadership are very much appreciated. You are one of our school corporation's shining Faces of Education. Thank you!

[Chris Freeman]
Recognizing Chris Freeman
Teacher
Fairview Elementary School

Tonight's honoree is MCCSC Teacher Chris Freeman. She was nominated by her Fairview Elementary School Colleague Nan Plumer. Chris began her career with the Monroe County Community School Corporation in 1990 and has been an asset ever since. When Fairview was notified of her selection for Faces of Education, her principal Karen Adams simply replied, "Good choice!" and Nan Plumer said, "Chris is one of those "behind the scenes worker bees" that I would love to see recognized for her amazing commitment to the children and staff at Fairview Elementary.

Chris is described by her colleagues to be an "outstanding educator." Her work over the last several years at Fairview is dedicated to helping improve student achievement. She works with the staff to analyze data and provide on-going professional development. Chris is a person that leads by example as she models instruction in the classroom or facilitate study groups. In addition, she helps the school secure and carryout grants to support professional development initiatives in the building.

Again, her colleague, Nan, stated, "Not only does Chris possess outstanding instructional knowledge, she has an extremely professional and collaborative style that encourages staff to work together and make decisions in the best interest of our students. Student achievement has increased over the past several years at Fairview, and I believe the hard work of Chris Freeman in collaboration with the administrators and staff is the reason for that increase.

Chris, your commitment and dedication to your fellow teachers and students is more than commendable. You, indeed, are one of our school corporation's shining Faces of Education. It is a pleasure to recognize this evening. Thank you!

Recognizing Helen Vaught and Sharon Ayres
Secretaries
MCCSC Business Office
[Vaught&Ayres]
Helen Vaught

[Vaught&Ayres]
Sharon Ayres

The MCCSC Business Office celebrated the 45th anniversaries of the employment of two key staff members in 2007. Helen Vaught was hired on October 1st, 1962 and Sharon Ayres was hired on March 1st 1962. The Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees pauses to recognize them tonight in our Faces of Education segment. They were nominated by MCCSC Comptroller Tim Thrasher and Assistant Comptroller Barbara Buckner

Helen has served as the primary secretary to the administrator responsible for the purchasing function since being hired. Sharon began her work with the school system preparing payrolls and became the bookkeeper for School Corporation funds and extra-curricular funds approximately one year later. They have both been exceptionally dedicated employees throughout their 45 years of employment with the Bloomington Metropolitan Schools and the MCCSC. Their attendance has been and continues to be exemplary and the quality of their work is excellent. They are both committed to completing their work on a timely basis and they do whatever is necessary to make that happen. If a co-worker in the Business Office is absent, Helen is quick to offer assistance completing the responsibilities of the co-worker's position as well as fulfilling the responsibilities of her own position. Sharon always goes over and above in her efforts, attitude and duties at the MCCSC Warehouse, regardless of the request.

Sharon and Helen both began their employment with the school system at the Bloomington Metropolitan Schools Administration Building located at the corner of College and Second Street, the current site of the United Way office. During their 45 years, they have worked with at least eleven Superintendents of Schools and seven different immediate supervisors who were responsible for the areas in which they worked. They both worked with "young" Jim Harvey as Director of Personnel and as Interim Superintendent as well as the more "experienced" Mr. Harvey as the current Superintendent of Schools. According to Tim Thrasher, "One of Sharon's greatest challenges may have been to train the MCCSC's now aged Comptroller (then called the Chief Accountant) during his first few weeks on the job in 1972 in anticipation of her impending maternity leave. While some may argue to this day over the degree to which that training was absorbed by the trainee, thanks to Sharon's efforts and the able assistance of Helen Vaught and other business office staff members during Sharon's absence, the school corporation did survive the much-dreaded (by us) leave of absence."

Office equipment has changed substantially during the period of Helen's and Sharon's employment. Hand-posted ledgers, typed reports and duplicating machines were replaced by the heavy and noisy, but much faster, NCR 33 Bookkeeping Machines and copy machines. These were, in turn, replaced by mainframe computers and then desktop computers. Faxes and e-mail have replaced, to a significant degree, the U.S. Mail and interschool mail. What has not changed over the years is the dedication and service that Sharon and Helen have shown to serving the MCCSC, its staff and students. For 45 years Sharon Ayres and Helen Vaught have truly been two very important Faces of Education in the Monroe County Community School Corporation.

Sharon Ayres and Helen Vaught, it is our pleasure to recognize you this evening. Your service to MCCSC is very much appreciated. Thank you.

[Lisa Mullis]
Recognizing Lisa Mullis
Health Aide
Grandview Elementary School

Tonight's honoree is Lisa Mullis, the health aide at Grandview Elementary School. She was nominated by her Principal Jennifer Baker. Ms. Mullis joined the Monroe County Community School Corporation in August of 2005, and quickly became as asset to the Grandview community. Her supervisors describe her as organized, caring and calm, patient with parents and students, and a colleague to staff members as well as a life-long learner.

A supreme example of her dedication was demonstrated on Friday, September 7, 2007. Her principal wrote, "Grandview sixth graders were outside having an extra recess. During this recess, several students were stung by yellow jackets. One sixth grade student, who has life-threatening allergies, was stung multiple times. The teacher quickly sent him to the health office where Lisa took immediate action. She notified the office that 911 needed to be called. As principal, I immediately assisted Lisa as she moved into action. She went through the protocol or treatment including administering an Epi-pen shot and as a result of her quick reactions, he was able to make it to the hospital in time to receive additional care, and he survived. Lisa, who works for very little pay, is responsible for saving this boy's life. Besides keeping exceptional records, maintaining excellent parent contact, and multi-tasking everyday, she (also) attended additional trainings last year in order to be better trained to care for our three, Type I diabetic children at Grandview. Lisa is one in a million and I believe she should be recognized as someone who has made a difference in our school community!"

Lisa Mullis, you are one of our school corporation's shining Faces of Education. It is a pleasure to recognize you for all of your diligent work and commitment to our students. Thank you.

[Janet Tupper]
Recognizing Janet Tupper
Administrative Assistant
to the
Superintendent and the Board of School Trustees

Outstanding, loyal, unrivaled, organized, knowledgeable, dedicated, unique, talented, calm, resilient, efficient and compassionate....

These adjectives and more have been used to describe the Monroe County Community School Corporation staff member featured in our first Faces of Education segment. Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and The Board, Mrs. Janet Tupper, has been a valued employee of the MCCSC, beginning in 1965, serving superintendents, the board of school trustees, and the school community for over 32 years. In addition to her service, Mrs. Tupper is a lifelong learner, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources Management from Oakland City College. Her job title has ranged from Executive Secretary to Administrative Assistant during her years with MCCSC, but one thing has not changed. She has been an asset to every superintendent she serves. Former Superintendent Ronald Walton declared Mrs. Tupper to be simply, "One of the best," and we agree.

She is more than a friend to her colleagues, a comforting smile to the parents, and unparalleled resource to all. Her knowledge and grasp of school law and policy is nothing short of amazing. Her work ethic and dedication has been known to span the work day and the twilight hours. Mrs. Tupper personifies excellence not only in her work performance, but in human spirit. She has served as mentor to many secretaries throughout the district. She is a listening ear and a guiding light to many. No job is ever too great, and no question is ever too small. Time is made for anyone who needs her help.

In her own words, Mrs. Tupper once said, "I could go on and on when relating the challenging, stimulating, and interesting moments of this position. It has been my pleasure to work for you and the Board of School Trustees. I never "dreaded" attending Board meetings but rather looked forward to the earnest discussions of the dedicated members seeking to further educational opportunities for the children in our community."

Tonight, it is my pleasure to turn the spotlight on an outstanding employee and very special person, Mrs. Janet Tupper. Thank you for your service to the MCCSC. You deserve this honor!
