A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

be a part of in the days ahead.

in
your

Groups
all across
the country will be sponsoring Chalk Walks this spring. Our chapter’s
date is Saturday, May 2, with registration at 10:00 and the walk at
10:30. Join us for a 3-mile jaunt through the IU campus in celebration
of great
teachers. The beginning location is at PDK International Headquarters,
408 N. Union.
•
TEACHING WITH HERB GARDENING – Darla Bent, Wal-Mart Teacher of
the Year 2006, an outstanding teacher in the Bloomfield School District,
will share her successful experiences teaching students how to be gardeners
while giving their attention to good health habits. You won’t
want to miss this date of Wednesday, May 13, 6:30 pm at PDK Headquarters.
Our IU/Alpha chapter is 103 years old, the same age as the association
since we were the first chapter. This January we celebrate our birthday
with an event
that was held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009. At that time, we honored four
loyal Kappans who have been members for 50 years – Harmon Baldwin,
Howard Mehlinger, Don Small and Charles Yservyn. Congratulations to those
members
and the many other Kappans throughout the association that have served our
profession so loyally over the years.
Also at our January meeting, Judy Witt of Rotary International, shared the
story of the founding of the Teachers Warehouse, a free store for public
school teachers. The mission of the Teachers Warehouse is to serve the educational
and creative needs of children by providing a unique means to transfer donated
surplus merchandise from businesses and individuals for use by students in
classrooms and schools. Donations are welcome. Our chapter was proud to recognize
Teachers Warehouse as our 2008 Outstanding Partner in Education and present
an engraved plaque to Judy Witt, the proud founder of this outstanding service
for teachers. Donations are always welcome. For additional information about
the Teachers Warehouse, call 812-339-7304 or send an e-mail to: teachersfriend@choiceonemail.com.
We hope you will make a choice to be part of the work of our chapter and of
the continued initiatives and opportunities we offer for all who continue to
support the ideals of PDK through leadership, service and research. If you
are a member of the association, we welcome you and invite your participation.
If you are not currently a member, make a contact today either to our chapter
or to PDK International.

IU/Alpha Chapter
