Service can help make us all better citizens. Not only does service help the people you are serving, but it also helps yourself. Once you know how good it feels to serve someone, you'll always want to help out others. By helping out your neighbor you have also helped your country, even if you've only helped one person in America. By being citizens of the United States, we all should give something back to America. By giving a service to your neighbor, family, friend, or even a stranger, you have done a good deed to both them and America. You may not be recognized for that act, but recognition is not all that matters. If you're serving because you want to be recognized, then you might as well forget about service making you a better citizen. You have to only worry about helping other people, not yourself. Only then will you have become a better citizen. |
