And why it makes us better Citzens

Dr. King's Activities We can all Serve Understanding it All People who Served
"The Drum Major Instinct" speech "The Drum Major Instinct"(audio) JFK's Inaugural speech (audio) Bibliography
America is at war right now. We have so many fellow American citizens in the Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines fighting for our beloved country, just like all the other wars we’ve fought, especially the Revolutionary War. But what would happen if they all decided to stop fighting in the wars or for our country? What if they decided not to serve?

America is a great country. But without people to serve our country, be it locally or overseas, America is nothing. We can’t just sit back and let other people do the work for us, just like we can’t just wait for another classmate to raise their hand and answer the teacher’s question.

We need to all come together and use our talents to help other people. By understanding the idea that we can all be great because we can all serve, and actually serving, we will all become better citizens. We will become better citizens because then we can understand that we don’t need to be rich, we don’t need to have experience in public office, or that we don’t have to be popular or a sports star to be great. Martin Luther King, Jr. told us that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. Once we have realized that, we will have become a good citizen. But to become a better citizen, we need to be great. And for that, we need to serve.
