COURSE DESCRIPTION

SPANISH III

DIPLOMA:  Core 40 and AHD                      21240H
full year                                     Grades: 9-12

Prerequisite: Passing grade in level II, “C” average or higher in level two highly recommended.

DESCRIPTION: Level III Spanish courses provide instruction enabling students to understand and appreciate other cultures by comparing social behaviors and values of people using the languages being learned. Students are willing to initiate and participate in discussions concerning these cultures. In addition, students are able to: respond to factual and interpretive questions and interact in a variety of social situations, such as expressing regrets, condolences, and complaints, and using more than rote memory formula phrases; read for comprehension from a variety of authentic materials, such as advertisements in newspapers and magazines, and cartoons and personal correspondence; read short literary selections of poetry, plays, and short stories; complete authentic forms and documents and take notes that require familiar vocabulary and structures; write paraphrases, summaries, and brief compositions; describe different aspects of the culture, using the world language where appropriate, including: (1) major historical events, (2) political structures, (3) value systems, (4) visual arts, (5) architecture, (6) literature, and (7) music; and seek help in a crisis situation and participate appropriately at special family occasions, such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, and anniversaries.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED         
Students will be provided with the Avancemos tres text and workbook.  They will need to purchase a notebook and a writing utensil. Colored markers, tissues, Spanish dictionary and index cards are optional.

 

COURSE  OUTCOMES   

Standard 1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and

emotions, and exchange opinions. (Interpersonal)

Standard 2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.

Standard 3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers

on a variety of topics. (Presentational)

Standard 4: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and

perspectives of the culture studied.

Standard 5: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and

perspectives of the culture studied.

Standard 6: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the foreign

language.

Standard 7: Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only

available through the foreign language and its culture.

Standard 8: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of

the language studied and their own.

Standard 9: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of

the cultures studied and their own.

 Preliminar and Unit 1-4 First Semester, Unit 5-8 Second Semester

 

GRADING:                                    

Assessment may include quizzes, written tests, oral tests, papers, projects, class notes, computer work, and class participation. COURSE  POLICIES:        
Basic courtesy and respect of others in the classroom is expected at all times.  No behavior that interferes with the learning process will be tolerated.   Reprimand by the teacher, parent notification, suspension from class, and detention may result if students fail to meet behavioral expectations.
