7th Grade
ENGLISH
Standard 1 Reading: Word Recognition: Recognize the meaning of foreign words and technical vocabulary from the surrounding words and sentences. Use a dictionary to find the meaning of a technical word.
Answer: We use a lot of different vocabulary words in every unit. Such as "try" meaning a score in rugby or "line of scrimmage" which is an imaginary line used in football. Words that you dont know should be looked up in the dictionary at home.
Standard 4 Writing: Conventions: Use correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and usage. Write using complex sentence structure.
Standard 5 Writing: Process: Discuss ideas for writing, keep a list of writing ideas, and use graphic organizers. Use note-taking skills. Write more than one draft of stories, poems, articles, or reports. Use a check list to review and evaluate writing. Edit, revise, and proofread writing.
Answer: We covered standards 4 & 5 with our writing assignment. Everyone had to take notes at the sporting event and then use complete sentences to write your article.
Standard 7 Speaking and Listening; Summarize information from several sources for an oral report. Read aloud before classmates. View a play or TV program critically. Listen to a public meeting and report on it. Conduct an interview. Use expressive language and gestures to persuade.
Answer: We use many skills that are associated with standard 7. Many times the captain is ask to explain rules. Many of you are ask to help demonstrate skills and explain rules to classmates. Some of you watched your sporting activity on TV for your writing assignment. However, the most important skill is in Physical Education class is listening.
MATH
Standard 6 Measurement: Measure lengths and angles. Find perimeters, circumferences and areas. Make estimates relating to size, quantity, capacity, temperature, and time.
Answer: You use measuring in your track unit (shot put, discus, high jump and long jump). Sometimes you find exact measurements and sometimes you are expected to estimate. You use measuring in the pool (100M, 400M etc.) You will find some type of measuring in most physical education units.
Standard 10 Reasoning: Make conjectures, gather evidence, and generalize. Develop rules and identify strategies.
Answer: Physical Education is all about rules and finding strategies that work. You are expected to work with your classmates to apply rules and find strategies for many units.
Standard 11 Communication: Talk and write about mathematics. Use mathematical symbols and techniques.
Standard 12 Connections: Recognize and make mathematical connections with other school subjects and with everyday experiences.
Answer: You will use standard 11 & 12 with many units such as the track unit, Presidential Physical Fitness testing, swimming and wrestling.
