In the beginning of the year we read a story about how newspapers are created and the jobs required to create a newspaper. We read about the people's jobs in the newspaper and the steps for creating a newspaper. For example one of the jobs is the paste up artist.  They organize the articles and ads in a newspaper. Then, 3 years ago we decided to create our own newspaper.

The first year we created The Fox Times. First, we decided on a name for our newspaper. Next, we made a list of all the jobs at a newspaper, and we assigned everyone a job. Then, everybody got to choose what they wanted to write about and we began our research. Finally, in May we had completed newspapers to hand out to all of our classrooms! (See pictures below of our success.)

The next year we decided to create Animal Safari Magazine after reading the newspaper story. Our new science curriculum included studying animals, so we decided to use our upcoming research (2 months of research) about our animals and write a descriptive paragraph which became part of our magazine. Every child picked their own individual animal to research, and we also included animals ads, an animal advice column, and animal comics. (See actual pages from our first classroom magazine below.)

This school year we will be creating another newspaper. We chose the name The Animal Times. Again, the kids will be chosing an animal to research and we plan to do at least a couple of months of research again this year. We will have many of the same sections that our magazine did this year, however, a new and important section will be the editorial editor and it will be interesting to see what letters will be sent to our editorial editor.

Stay tuned to what animal that article may be about...
