After studying a unit about butterflies where each child observes their own butterfly as it goes through the life cycle, our class sets them free! If you look really close at the middle picture you can see a butterfly.

As our school year was coming to a close the 3rd grade classrooms went to the Indianapolis Zoo and Butterfly Garden to celebrate our science units on animals and butterflies. We had a great time and some great pictures to show for it!

First we went to the Butterfly Garden...

The butterflies are so close that you can almost touch them. Butterflies develop in a chrysalis and different types of butterflies have different chrysalis' which can be seen in the last picture.

This large butterfly was enjoying some of the nectar on these fruits and vegetables.

This butterfly is a Blue Morpho and it was the hit of the show.

Next we went to the Zoo...

We went to the zoo on the right day because we got to feed the giraffes and pet one of the baby elephants. Did you know that a giraffe's tongue is 14 inches long and half pink and half black in color?
