What We Experience in Our Classroom Daily
Each morning the kids are responsible to complete Daily Oral Work (D.O.W.) which consists of reading, language arts, and math concepts. Each of these morning problems are based on topics or subjects that we are currently working with, or we have just completed, and they are being reinforced for better understanding. Each of these topics are then discussed and corrected at various times throughout the day.
At this time they are also given the opportunity to correct work below 80%. Using one of our Lifeskills (skills that each child will have to use for life), effort, the kids are given the chance to use their efforts to improve grades if they wish too. We then begin our day with all of the basic subjects of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Specials (P.E., Music, and Art) and thematic units.
Our thematic time alternates between Science, Social Studies, and Health throughout this school year. When possible we may attempt to integrate one or more of these thematic topics, such as our Inuit and Alaska unit, where Science and Social Studies are integrated together. Each unit is also integrated with our daily subjects often, such as Spelling, Reading, Writing, and English. Doing this the kids experience our thematic unit throughout the day to reinforce the topic, and as a collaboration of many subjects just as real life experiences are.
