Forged by Fire
By: Sharon M. Draper
They say: ''Gerald learns to deal with abuse and indifference from the age of three to seventeen. He spends five years protecting his fragile, half-sister, Angel, from her abusive father and faces the prospect of a final confrontation before the problem can be solved.''
I say: This story is about a deprived boy named Gerald. Gerald is raised by his mother, who is either drunk or high most of the time. Gerald learns to take care of himself on his own at a young age. One day, Gerald decides to play with his mother's lighter while she is gone. He catches the apartment on fire and is sent to live with his grandmother because his mother is not taking proper care of him. After he has been there for a long time, his mother comes to see him. Gerald learns that his mother has a husband, Jordan, and that he has a half-sister, Angel. This story is about how he helps Angel get through life, and how he gets through it himself with all the other pressures.
