It was a warm Friday in the summer of 2007 and you had made plans to go swimming at your local pool with your good African American friend, Lataya, later in the day. You would have been at the pool by now but your mother was making you work on your chores. When the time finally came, you rushed out the door and ran the whole two blocks straight to her house. A few minutes later, you were both walking through the pool entrance giggling like crazy.

Later that day, after you had left the pool, you were thinking about your spectacular time at the pool. Oddly, your train of thought wondered to the issue of different races, and diversity. After awhile, you realize that if Martin Luther King Jr. hadn’t been the man he was, you most likely would have never met Lataya or been able to swim at the same pool as her.

Living in a diverse society has a countless number of advantages, some of which include: meeting new people, learning about different cultures, and trying new food. Without the chance to interact with those who are different than you, the people of the world would lack the ability to gain knowledge about other cultures.
