American Heroes

~*Madame C. J. Walker*~

In Your Opinion: Who is an American Hero?

The question above is what I have had to think about and come up with an answer. In my mind, a certain Martin Luther King, Jr, and Madame C. J. Walker fit the description of an American hero. An American hero is one that endures hardship and pain to obtain one's goals. An American hero prevails even when the odds are against him or her. An American hero is a person who uses their mind and will to achieve the unexpected.

It is clear that Martin Luther King, Jr. was all this and more. Many of his struggles and hardships paved the way for how America views African Americans from the past, the present, and in the future. Because of his role in the Civil Rights Movement, more Americans, regardless of their race, nationality, or beliefs, are now seeing more African Americans as heroes.

Madame C.J. Walker was born and raised in hard times. She had to work for all she had and when her parents died she had to work even harder. There was no room in her schedule for dawdling and there was no extra money in her budget for things bought on a whim. Yet she prevailed through all those times and rose above all expectations, far beyond the reach of most African Americans of those times. In my mind this is what makes her an American hero. She was an incredible person with an incredible will, in my mind that would make anyone an American hero. Just to beat the odds, in simplest terms.
