Timeline
1937- Born as Colin Luther Powell in the Bronx.
1940- Moves to Hunts Point with family.
1954- Graduates from Morris High School and enrolls in City College of New York. While there, enrolls in ROTC.
1958- Graduates from City College of New York at the top of his ROTC class and is commissioned as Second Lieutenant in U.S. Army. Enrolls in Infantry Officer's Basic Training. Attends Airborne and Ranger schools.
1959- Serves as platoon leader and rifle company commander in West Germany.
1960- Becomes battalion adjutant* at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
1962- Marries Alma Johnson. Goes to Vietnam to serve as an advisor to an infantry battalion.
1963- Firstborn, Michael, is born. Powell gets wounded in action in Vietnam and receives the Purple Heart.
1964- Enrolls in Command and General Staff College.
1965- Daughter, Linda, is born.
1968- Powell goes to Vietnam again to serve as an infantry battalion executive officer and assistant chief of staff, G-3, 23rd Infantry Division.
1969- Enrolls at George Washington University.
1970- Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
1971- Earns a Master of Business degree from George Washington University and his second daughter, Annemarie, is born.
1972- Selected as White House Fellow. He also serves as special assistant to the deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. Powell is promoted to Major.
1973- Assumes command of the First Battalion, 32nd Infantry in South Korea.
1974- Becomes operations research analyst in the office of the assistant defense seceratary.
1975- Enrolls in the National War College.
1976- Assumes command of the Second Brigade, 101st Airborn Divison at Frot Campbell, Kentucky. He graduates with distinction from the National War College.
1977- Serves in the Intermediate Office af the seceratary of defense and as senior military assistant to the deputy of defense.
1979- Serves as an executive assistant to the seceratary of energy and is promoted to Brigader General.
1981- Becomes assistant commander for Operations and Training, Fourth Infantry Divison at Fort Carson, Colorado.
1983- Serves as deputy commander at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and becomes Senior Military Assistant to the seceretary of defense.
1986- Assumes command of the U.S. Army V in Frankfurt West Germany. He also testifies before the Tower Commision about his role in the Iran-Contra affair.
1987- Becomes Deputy National Security Advisor and National Security Advisor.
1989- Promoted to Four Star General.
1989- Named commander in chief of the U.S. Forces Command at Fort McPherson in Atlanta Georgia. He also becomes chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff and directs an invasion of Panama to capture General Manuel Noriega.
1990- Directs the Operation Desert Shield campiagn in the Middle East.
1991- Oversees U.S. effort in the Persian-Gulf War. At this time, he also accepts 2nd term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
1993- Begins to write his autobigraphy, My American Journey.
1995- Publishes My American Journey.
2001- Sworn in on January 20 to become the Secretary of State.
