Rules of Life

Colin Powell was born on April 5th, 1937 in the Harlem district of New York.  Before Colin could establish any prejudices against other ethnic groups, the Powells moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx.  Because of the area of which Colin lived, he had no idea that he was a different color than a white man or a Jewish person or a person of German descent or an Arab.  He thought that everyone was the same color.

This lack of knowledge of race differences probably helped Colin excel to become the best that he could be.  For him personally, he followed certain rules of life that helped him be a better person. Included in one of the many biographies written about him is his Rules for Life.

He wanted to prove that the people of the world could do something and that they had no limitations because of who they were.  For example, when he first joined the military, he entered into the military from ROTC as a second lieutenant.  He was told by his commanding officers that it would take twenty years to become a lieutenant colonel.  Colin worked hard and got there in sixteen years.
