In my opinion, Colin Powell is considered an American hero because he improved race relations in the military. Because of the work of Martin Luther King, Jr., Colin Powell could succeeded in so many ways. He is one of the few African Americans that have rose to the top faster than most African Americans in American history. He was head of the United States Military and is now Secretary of State. This man has gone from next to nothing to one of the most powerful and influential leaders in the world. When the United States was a racist nation, Powell rose to the top.
