LeRoy "Satchel" Paige

On July 7, 1948, an African American gentlemen by the name of Leroy Paige entered the Big Leagues. On this date, Paige had already set a record for being the oldest rookie in history. After twenty-two years in the Negro Leagues, the Cleveland Indians gave him a chance at his life long dream, to be in the Big Leagues. On August 3, 1948, he became the first black ballplayer to pitch in the Big Leagues.

Satchel Paige is considered an American Hero because of his hard work and dedication. Not only has he worked hard on the field, he always supported his family and helped pave the way for all African American athletes.
