Biographical Information
1929- January 15, Michael Luther King (MLK) (later re-named Martin) is born.
1944- MLK goes to Morehouse college.
1947- MLK ordained and becomes assistant pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
1948- MLK graduates from Morehouse college.
1951- MLK graduates from Crozer Theological Seminary.
1952- MLK meets Coretta Scott (CS) who he will marry the next year.
1953- CS and MLK marry on June 18.
1954- CSK graduates from New England Conservatory of Music. May 17- Brown vs. Board of Education decision.
1955- Spring- MLK gets his Ph.D. Supreme Court's "all deliberate speed" decision. Nov. 17, 1st daughter Yolanda King is born. Dec. 1, Rosa Parks incident. Dec. 5, Montgomery bus boycott begins.
1956 - Mar. 22, MLK convicted on bus boycott charges. May- Federal court rules that bus segregation is unconstitutional. Nov. 13, Supreme Court upholds Federal court ruling on bus segregation. Dec. 20, Montgomrery Mayor Gayle agrees to desegregate buses.
1957- Feb. 14, SCLC formed. May 17, Prayer Pilgrimage of Freedom held in Washington D.C. On Oct. 23, MLK III is born.
1958 - MLK arrested on unstable charge of disobeying an officer. Sep. 5, MLK convicted. Sep. 17, MLK's Stride Toward Freedom is published. Dec. 19, MLK is stabbed in Harlem.
1959 - Nov. MLK resigns as pastor of Dexter Avenue Church in Montgomery.
1960 - Jan. MLK, becomes pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. MLK indicted on tax charges. May, MLK tax trial. he is declared innocent by an all white jury. Fall, MLK arrested in sit-in. MLK is sentenced to six months in prison on traffic violation. John F. Kennedy then calls CSK, and then MLk is released.
1961- Jan. 30, Dexter King born.
1963 Jan., MLK, Ralph Abernathy, and Fred Shuttlesworth meet with JFK and Robert Kennedy, who say Kenedy Administration plans no civil rights legislation in '63. March 28, Bernice King is born. April 12, MLK arrested in Birmingham where he writes "A Letter From a Birmingham Jail. August 28, MLK recites his famous "I Have A Dream " speech. MLK's book, The Strength To Love, is published.
1964 - MLK published his book, Why We Can't Wait. July 2, Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Dec. 10, MLK receives the Nobel Prize.
1965 - The 1965 Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President Johnson on August 6, 1965.
1967- Dr. King published his book Where do we go from here? Chaos or Community.
1968 - MLK delivered his last speech "I've Been to the Mountain Top," on April 3, 1968. MLK was shot while on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, April 4, 1968. President Johnson declared April 7, as a national day of mourning in honor of MLK. His body was viewed on April 7, and his funeral was eulogized at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on April 9. He was buried at South View Cemetery. Over 300,00 people marched through Atlanta following the horse-drawn coffin.
