American Heroes: Black Hawk

Biography

Black Hawk was a warrior, a chief and an American hero. The Native Americans were the first Americans so we must respect and honor people like Black Hawk.

He was raised to be a leader from his father.

He was raised in a longhouse with his father's family.

He was born in 1767.

He was born in a village named Saukenuk, the largest village in the Sac and Fox Indian tribe.

It was located on the east of the Mississippi River, where Illinois is today.

Every Sac Native American started praying at a young age, mostly for a personal guardian. If the young Sac finds a weird or wonderous looking thing (like a feather, animal tooth, claw, or a weird looking rock) they took it, kept it, and prayed to it because they thought it was a sign that the personal guardian has come.

Black Hawk was a warrior and a spokesman for the Sac and the Fox tribe.

The men in his family started teaching him skills when he was a teenager until he reached adulthood. One of the things they taught him was the modern version of lacrosse.

Black Hawk proabably spent most of his time outside when he was young.

When the Sacs were at war, Black Hawk's father died in battle against the Cherokee. Black Hawk swore revenge against the Cherokee.

Black Hawk took command of his tribe and drove back the Cherokee people.

In a time we are in today, I think Black Hawk would say this about the events of September 11th....

"I think what happened is a wrong we must right, and it should be a fight we fight for till the end."
