American Heroes

*Melba Pattillo Beals*

Even though slavery ended in 1865 and the African-Americans were considered "free," people's opinions and thoughts about African Americans didn't change. Segregation took place after slavery was ended. African-Americans were not able to drink from the same water fountains as white people. They couldn't use the same bathrooms as white people. They couldn't even eat at the same places or go to the same school with them.

A young girl named Melba Pattillo Beals grew up under segregation. Her way of life was exactly like any other person. She grew up like every other 7th grade girl in 1954. She liked to hang out with her friends, listen to music, and just do what every other girl does. But before her High School began, something would change all that.

I think Melba is an American Hero because she had the American Spirit. She stood up for her beliefs and was brave. Whenever someone said something rude to her, she didn't show her sadness, she just smiled and said thank you. Although she did disobey people sometimes, overall I feel she is a good role model for everyone.

Melba overcame discrimination and violence with perserverance and character. She never acted intimidated or felt like she didn't belong at Central High School. She was very strong mentally and felt proud for what she was doing. I think that is the true American Spirit.
