American Heroes: Franklin Roosevelt
~A Hero Is Born~
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30th, 1882 to his parents James and Sallie, and from then until about age 14, he had the best of everything. A private tutor was hired to teach him when he was 6, and continued until he was 14. The Roosevelt's were extremely wealthy, and had a couple of yachts, and often vacationed in very expensive, exotic places. His parents were the ethical teachers of his youth, and taught him to be honest, and to never disrespect someone because of their social status, or what they had in the bank. He stuck by these rules for his entire life. As soon as he turned 14, his parents sent him to an all-boys boarding school, where he was to follow strict rules, study vigorously, and live in a 6x9 room, with a: narrow bed, bureau, chair and small rug. They were expected to rise early, be ready for breakfast at 7:30, and then attend chapel, and then on to their studies. At Groton, Franklin had a pretty tough time being accepted, because he wasn't good at sports, and he had a slight British accent, and therefore labeled as a nerd. In his final year there, to prove he wasn't a sissy, he starred in the school play, managed the baseball team, and sang in the choir (until his voice changed). He also grew into quite a successful debater. After his 5 years at Groton, he decided to attend Harvard, where he wrote for the school newspaper. He also tried, unsuccessfully, to join the coolest club at Harvard, Porcellian (once again trying to be popular and failing). He did manage to make the second most exclusive group, Fly. Also, while in college he began to notice Sara Roosevelt (FDR's fifth cousin once removed). When they became engaged, his mother fought with everything she had to separate them, but failed. They were married on March 17th, and went on to have five children, Anna, James, Franklin Jr. (who died as a child), Elliot, Franklin Jr., and John. After Roosevelt's graduation from Harvard, he went on to pursue his law career at Columbia. He then graduated from Columbia, and passed his New York State bar examination in 1907. He got a job with a well known lawyers firm, but was bored out of his mind. He then decide to take up politics. |
