Jackson Creek Middle School
Math is Everywhere

In October 2002, the teachers at Jackson Creek Middle School came together to honor math. During a teacher workshop, teachers were reacquainted with the math they use in their daily instruction. Math can be found in almost every subject taught at Jackson Creek. Teachers and students use math to average their scores, measure a cup of sugar, draw perspectives, write a sonnet, or sing a chorus.
Mission
This workshop was created to
explore methods and strategies that aim to improve student
learning and achievement. Integrating math across the curriculum
was part of the school improvement plan and gave teachers an
opportunity to engage in professional dialogue with colleagues.
Ultimately, the teachers want students of Jackson Creek to leave with the reasoning skills they need to solve both academic and real-world problems. By emphasizing math everywhere, students will be better prepared for the future.
Math can be found in almost every subject. Problem solving is a component in every discipline. There is qualitative and quantitative math. The qualitiative math includes problem solving, reasoning skills, and communication. To meet the needs of students and the school improvement plan, the goal is for communication, reasoning, and problem solving skills to be emphasized and noted in every class.
Math and Reading
Math can definitely be found in
almost every subject- even reading and language arts. The Monroe
County Community School Foundation awarded a grant to Jackson
Creek to purchase math related reading material that students
could read for pleasure. Kris McGlaun, Jackson Creek's library
media specialist and Susan Schooler, Jackson Creek's Math teacher
wrote the grant as a way for students to view math in a different
and pleasurable way. Teachers in Language Arts and Mathematics
incorporated the books that were purchased with the grant into
their curriculum. Some teachers had their students read math
related books and then write a book report about the book while
others had students read the math related books and then create
their own picture books which illustrated a math concept they
learned in their math classes.
