Ann Turner wrote her first story when she was eight. She continued writing through college and trained as a teacher. She was a high school English teacher from 1968 to 1969. She wrote poetry for two years and had one book published. She had not decided to write for children until her mother asked if she would like to do a book together. The book was about vultures, she wrote it and her mother illustrated it.

Ann Turner has received many awards, she received first prize in the Atlantic Monthly College creative writing contest in 1967. She received first prize for Through Moon and Stars and Night Skies from National Council for the Social Studies in 1991. She also received first prize for Finding Water from best books for young adults and quick picks for reluctant readers.

Ann Turner's poems are like little short stories. In her book Learning to Swim she tells about a young girl who goes with her family to their summer house. She plans on spending the summer learning to swim, picking berries and playing with her brothers. The wonderful summer she planned was ruined when a neighbor boy abuses her.
