C40 U.S. History

C40 U.S. History covers the time from exploration/discover to as close to present day as time permits.

We will begin by reviewing the information from the 8th Grade U.S. History course.  This will include the period of exploration all the way through the Civil War and Reconstruction.  During this time I intend to give them deeper context to the information they learned three years ago.

Our second unit will take us into the changes in American culture from the 1860’s to the beginning of World War I.  The students will be doing a group project that will convey the information they have learned about their specific topic to their entire class.  Each group will produce a modern looking news broadcast that will relate the information from their chosen section to the class.

The third unit will focus on America becoming a Super Power in the world and also the Progressive Era at home.  We will then cover the causes, the confrontations, and the affects of World War I.

Next we will move to the time period between world wars and focus on the social changes that occurred; the prosperity of the 1920’s, the causes and effects of the Depression, and the ensuing New Deal legislation aimed at ending the Depression.

The unit covering World War II and the ensuing Cold War will be next.  We will look at how America’s role in the world changed dramatically following the War and how the Cold War began.  We will also look at the changes that occurred at home during this time.

If all goes well we will be able to cover the turmoil and change of the 50’s and 60’s.  We will look at the Civil Rights Movement, The Kennedy and Johnson presidencies, and the increased activism brought on by the Vietnam War.

Any remaining time in the second semester will focus on issues facing America as we move into the 21st Century.
