MISSION
STATEMENT
The
ELL Office coordinates a tutoring program in the MCCSC
schools that matches IU student, pre-professional and professional
educator volunteers with K-12 students who are new
to this culture and/or learning English as a new language.
The volunteer tutors provide one-on-one and small
group assistance, cross-cultural exchange, English
conversation, classwork/homework assistance, and may
provide English language instruction according to
their experience.
Tutoring program provides the volunteer with
an opportunity to:

Tutor K-12 English language learners one-on-one or
in small groups
• Collaborate with classroom teachers or other volunteers
• Receive professional supervision: on-site
through the ELL Office
• Participate in individual and group orientation,
follow-up, and reflection meetings
• Benefit from a peer support network, coordinated
by an Advocate for Community Engagement (ACE) from
the IU Office of Service Learning
• Be trained in Universal Precautions
• Contribute to a student’s educational
success
• Develop a quality, supportive relationship
with a child or youth
Time commitment:
Volunteers
will tutor a minimum of 1-2 hours per week and one
orientation and one to two reflection meetings per
semester.
GOALS
To help MCCSC English Lauguage Learning students meet their educational
goals, ELL Office will provide resources and support
to
•
Foster a respectful learning environment that values
individual and cultural differences,
• Facilitate the integration of newly arriving
students and families,
• Meet teachers’ needs to respond to the
demands of an increasingly complex and culturally
diverse student body,
• Provide a tutor for student who is in
need of assistance because they are English language
learners,
• Provide quality training and support for the
volunteers,
• Promote community involvement in the schools
and school involvement in the community.
