CALP
(Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency):
language and literacy skills which correlate with
academic achievement.
EFL
(English as a Foreign Language): refers to
English taught in other countries
ELL
(English Language Learner): an acronym used
to refer to students who are in the process of acquiring
English language skills.
ELLPAC
(English Language Learners Placement and Assessment
Committee): school committee responsible
for Title III compliance, with direction and support
from the ESL Office.
ELP
(English Language Proficiency): a 5-point
scale measuring English language skills. ELP levels
as determined by state-approved instrument LAS Links.
ENL
(English as a New Language): a high school
course for grades 9-12 which includes English language
skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing
and comprehension plus the State of Indiana language
arts curriculum modified for each skill level. The
course is good for up to 4 English credits towards
a diploma in place of English Language Arts.
ESL
(English as a Second Language): class or
program of instruction in English language skills
and support for other academic content areas in the
regular classroom K-8.
FEP
(Fluent English Proficiency): refers to English
language proficiency level 5, comparable to native
fluency. Student does not require special instruction.
Home
Language: the
language spoken by the student at home.
ILP
(Individual Learning Plan): prescribes instructional
and assessment strategies to meet ELL needs according
to English language proficiency level.
Immigrant:
In federal and state education law, term refers to
students born outside the U.S. who have not yet completed
three years of attendance in U.S. schools. THIS IS
NOT A REFERENCE TO VISAS, LEGAL RESIDENCE OR IMMIGRATION
STATUS.
L1:
One’s first language.
L2:
One’s second or target language may be acquired
or learned through study.
LEP
(Limited English Proficiency): refers to
English language proficiency levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. Level 1-
Beginner, Levels 2,3-Intermediate, Level 4-Advanced.
Student requires ESL and differentiated instruction
according to Individual Learning Plan.
LM
(Language Minority): refers to students who
have a language other than English as their native language, student language, or home language.
