Which
schools offer English language instruction?
Your
home address in Bloomington/Monroe County will determine
which school your student attends. Normally, students
attend the school in the neighborhood where they live.
(See School maps.) If your child needs English language
instruction, please check ESL/ENL
Program at each school. Currently, 5/14 elementary
schools, 3 middle schools and 2 high schools offer
ESL/ENL instruction. Two schools, Templeton Elementary
School and Tri-North Middle School are assigned as
ESL/ENL magnet schools in MCCSC to serve students
from neighborhood schools where English language instruction
is not yet available. Transportation to magnet schools
will be provided free of charge.
Does
my child need to take the English Language Proficiency
Test?
- Yes.
According to U.S. education law, new students who
speak or used to speak languages other than English
must take a test in school to evaluate their English
language proficiency within 30 days of their first
day of school. Parents will be notified in writing
of the test results and our recommendations for
placement. Beginner and intermediate English Language
Learners will be recommended for instruction in
English as a Second Language (ESL – grades
1-8) or English as a New Language (ENL – a
high school course good for two years of English
credit).
-
English language proficiency level is determined
by Indiana state standards in 5 levels using state-approved
tests. There are four levels of language learning
and level 5 is fluency.
