PROJECT FLAME
F.L.A.M.E. is an acronym for Family Literacy: Aprendiendo, Mejorando, Educando (Learning, Improving, Learning). FLAME was developed by Flora Rodriguez-Brown, PhD and Timothy Shanahan, PhD at the University of Illinois-Chicago. The project is based on the belief, supported by research, that the when parents provide a positive learning environment and are involved in their child's school, achievement is enhanced and improved. "Since literacy is social and cultural in nature (Heath, 1983), it is best developed in the context of the family and daily lives of the participating families." Project FLAME offers the families involved the opportunity to improve their English language skills through a weekly English as a New Language class and the opportunity to learn ways to support their children's literacy development during weekly family literacy sessions. One is not exclusive of the other. Parents who don't speak English well are not view as competent and invoke shame from their children in school and social settings. Classes which develop English competency provide the tools with which to support their children at home and participate in conferences and school events. Family literacy sessions provide needed tools about how children learn as well hands on activities that are easily translated to the home.
