Program
Description:
University
Elementary School offers an English Learning Program
that teaches basic language skills, grammar, language
usage, reading and writing skills. We place great
importance on creating a nurturing environment in
which international students in need of English instruction
can transition into this culture with as little stress
as possible.
During
ENL/ESL time, children are taught vocabulary, reading,
grammar, (using English at Your Command,) and conversational
skills through thematic units that allow them to build
language skills. The thematic units form a contextual
net that enables students to build conceptual understanding
of the language. Many different techniques are utilized-direct
teacher instruction, small group work, partner work,
learning vocabulary through music, utilizing many
hands-on activities, and so forth.
Students
are also given the opportunity to bring assignments
from their regular classroom to ENL/ESL for assistance.
Assistance is given with both short-term assignments
and longer class projects.
There
is also a time during which literacy is the main focus.
Reading, phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling, comprehension
and vocabulary are all addressed.
Our
goal is to provide students with the tools they need
to be functional in their regular classrooms as quickly
as possible. It is also extremely important to us
that they feel comfortable as members of the University
School community.
