Program
Description:
The ESL program at Tri-North consists
of two periods per day, self-contained The first period
is for all ESL students who need English language
instruction, currently eleven students). The students
in this class are at levels 1 through 3-4, as tested
by the Woodcock-Munoz. These students are given English
language instruction in small groups, as a whole class,
and individually, according to their needs. The ESL
instructor maintains contact with each ESL student’s
classroom teachers (currently 17 other teachers),
often on a daily basis. There is currently no set
curriculum and materials. A variety of printed material,
audio cassettes, visuals, and video are all used for
instruction. All instruction is aligned with state
academic standards.
The second daily period of ESL is
reserved as a resource class, which currently serves
14 students ranging from level 1 to level 4. These
students receive assistance in all classroom subjects
including homework, reteaching concepts that are not
under5stood and additional time or explanation on
tests. I am in constant contact with their other teachers
concerning their needs and concerns.
Testing is done at least once per
year, using the Woodcock-Munoz. For all students who
require testing, an ILP is created and updated yearly.
Placement in ESL and ESL Resource are based on these
results. Recommendations for 8th graders going on
to high school are also made based on test updates
in the spring.
