Program
Description:
The
ESL program at Binford and Rogers Elementary Schools
is a combination of two models of instruction, pull-out
and inclusion. It serves students in grades K-6. English
language learners are placed in mainstream classrooms
and receive ESL support based on their individual
needs.
This
instruction incorporates teaching methods such as
direct teacher instruction, small group work, partner
work, or one-on-one work. All units of study are aligned
with both state and local academic standards.
The
instrument utilized to determine the English language
proficiency level of the students is the Woodcock
Munoz Language Survey. Students must obtain a level
4 or 5 proficiency level in each of the four areas
of language (reading, writing, listening, and speaking)
to be considered ready to exit the program. Once students
have exited, they are closely monitored to ensure
success continues without the support of the ESL program.
Students
at a level of proficiency of 3 or lower are pulled-out
of the regular classroom to learn survival English
and/or to receive any assistance with particular classroom
assignments or areas in which they are struggling.
However, the third grade ESL students, who are at
a level 4 proficiency, are pulled-out specifically
for reading and language arts instruction four days
a week at the request of the mainstream teachers.
Students
at a level 4 or 5, and some at lower levels depending
on numbers of students in a class and their needs,
receive support through the inclusion model, in which
I assist the mainstream teacher in instructing the
students and modifying lessons to individualize the
learning activities for the students. This instruction
is not limited to reading and language arts, but also
includes the content areas.
For
all grade levels, ILPs
are created, and there is constant collaboration with
classroom teachers to ensure that English language
learners receive the necessary and legal accommodations
for instruction and assessment on an individual basis.
