Miss Armstrong's First Grade Class
2003-2004
Rules:
Here is a list of rules that our class created. Please review the rules with your child.
Behavior Plan:
I believe that children need to take responsibility for the choices they make. In school, children can make the choice to behave and follow the rules, or misbehave and break the rules. If they choose to break the rules, they will be disrupting others and make it difficult for learning to take place. This is unacceptable behavior. Those students who choose to misbehave will have consequences for that choice.
In the classroom, we will be using a green, yellow, and red card system. A green card means appropriate behavior. A yellow card means the student have been warned two times. A red card means the student will be have a time-out in the classroom. Any other problems will result in going to In School Suspension (I.S.S.) or the principal’s office. Students who remain on a green or yellow card will earn a sticker. Stickers earn prizes in the classroom Prize Box. At the end of each week, a progress report will be sent home to let you know your child’s behavior during the week. In order for the behavior plan to work effectively, please go over the report with your child every week. Also, keep an eye open for good behavior. Everyday, I name a "superstar" student in the classroom for appropriate behavior (stayed on a green card, used manners, completed homework and class work, etc.). Your child will be wearing a "star" sticker when awarded. Please be sure to congratulate your child when he/she is the "superstar" for the day.
If a rule is broken:
1st time - verbal warning
2nd time - move green card to yellow
3rd time - move yellow card to red and time-out in the classroom
4th time – go to I.S.S. and call the parents (possible visit to the principal’s office)
***Severe misbehavior - student is sent to principal's office immediately

Take Home Folders:
I will do my best to let you know what is happening in the classroom. Each day, I will send home a folder. In the folder, you will find homework and important school information. On Mondays, I will send home a classroom newsletter, weekly progress report, and homework from the previous week. The newsletter will tell you what we are doing at school for the week. The weekly progress report will show your child’s behavior from the previous week. Feel free to use the report to write any comments concerning your child's progress or school information. I will also send home any graded homework from the last week. Look for it to be stapled together. I ask that you review the homework with your child and discuss his/her academic progress. The students are to return the progress report, with a parent/guardian signature, on Tuesday.
Homework:
Homework is an important issue with students and parents. I will send homework from time to time. When homework is sent, it will be on Monday-Thursday nights. There will be no homework over the weekend. When working with your child on homework, it should take about 30 minutes or less. If you find homework is lasting longer, let me know as soon as possible. Spelling words should be practiced every homework evening for about 5 minutes. Reading books are sent home twice weekly to be read with a parent. Take turns reading with your child and watch as he/she progresses as a reader this year. Math homework will also be sent home twice weekly. Continue to practice math skills with your child. Please spend the time going over homework with your children. I have found that parents who do this are aware of their child's ability and not surprised when report cards come home.

Literacy Groups:
Everyday, each student will be attending literacy groups. Literacy groups are taught by the Fairview Title I teachers (and myself). These groups give students the opportunity to have more individualized reading instruction. Literacy groups last 30 minutes. The lessons focus on specific reading skills, word work, writing, and reading comprehension. Every Tuesday, your child will bring home a sentence (cut up) he/she wrote in literacy groups. Your child is to put the sentence together, like a puzzle, and write the sentence on the homework paper. On Wednesday, the homework should be returned. Please work with your child on the homework. Also, look for the Title I Progress Reports sent home periodically.
Recess:
As long as weather permits, our recesses are outside on the playground. Inside recess will be held in the classroom where board games, puzzles, books, and computers are available. If you would like to have your child stay inside on a certain day, due to health reasons, please send me a note. Every month, those students who have not been sent to In School Suspension (I.S.S.) will receive Extra Recess.
Scholastic See Saw Book Orders:
I will be sending home book orders throughout the year. These books are very inexpensive and a great way to build your child's home library. Our classroom receives free books depending on our total order amount. If you plan to order something, please have your order and money (in an envelope) turned in by Friday after it is sent home. I will always place orders over the weekend. It takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the books to be delivered.
Birthdays:
If your child has a birthday during the school year, you may send treats if you choose. We usually have the party in the afternoon right before the children go home (around 2:45). We have 15 students enrolled in our class (as of now). Please do not feel obligated to send treats, but let me know if you plan to do so.
V.I.P. (Very Important Person):
Each month, a teacher chooses a child who demonstrates a positive attitude, good behavior, or academic progress. This child receives a pin in recognition of his/her achievement. The V.I.P.s are pictured in the Fairview office. Each V.I.P. student also attends a party in the afternoon, which involves popcorn, soft drinks, and a movie.
