People Who Took a Stand
Who else was there?
Many people stood up for thier rights during the years. Two of the people who influenced Martin
Luther King, Jr. were Rosa Parks and Mohandas Gandhi. These two also believed in social justice and
pursuded thier hopes into
reality. Rosa Parks worked along side
Dr. King in the American Civil Rights Movement, while Mohandas Gandhi led India into
freedom. Both used nonviolent actions to
make a difference. All three worked hard
to get freedom, in many more ways than one.
Rosa Parks:

Rosa Parks, born on February
4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, worked to give African Americans civil rights
along with many others. She triggered
the start of the American Civil Rights Movement on December 1, 1995 when she
refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. This action was against the law. Rosa Parks was arrested and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
started. Rosa Parks also did many other
things for the movement. Martin Luther
King, Jr. was greatly effected by her in multiple
ways. Like many others, Dr. King was
upset at Rosa Parks's arrest. She also gave him many ideas for his
work. Rosa Parks's
work is valued greatly today.
Mohandas Gandhi:

Mohandas Gandhi worked to
give India
freedom from Great Britian in nonviolent ways. Born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India, Mohandas Gandhi knew the
almost constant want for freedom in his country. He led India to independence in 1947. When assassinated by a Hindu extremist on
January 30, 1948, many riots occured throughout India in
result. Mohandas Gandhi also influenced
Dr. King a lot. His work inspired Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. in great ways that also inspired many other who wished
to make a difference. Mohandas Gandhi's
work continues to be remembered today.
