Biography of Dr. King

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

      He was born as Michael Luther King, but changed his name. Many people in his family were pastors, and he wanted to follow in their footsteps. He attended many segregated schools in Georgia and graduated at age 15 from high school. In 1948 he received the B. A. degree from Morehouse College and soon became president of a white senior class at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He received the B.D. in 1951 and enrolled at Boston University. Martin was given a degree in 1955 and he met and married Coretta Scott. Martin was soon a father of four children.

      Martin was made pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in 1954. King was a member of the National Association for the advancement of Colored People, in which he was dedicated to civil rights. He took place in the famous bus boycott which lasted 382 days. During the boycott, Martin’s house was bombed and he was arrested, yet he came out as a significant Negro leader.

      “I have a Dream”, probably Martin’s most famous speech, was organized as a demonstration of 250,000 people, black and white. It was included in the many speeches Martin said in his time. Martin was honored many times, by TIME and he received the Nobel Peace Prize.      

       After a life devoted to civil rights, Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated a balcony of a hotel in Memphis Tennessee on April 4, 1968. The world mourned the passing of this great leader.
