Mr. Shields's Personal Page

Mr. Shields is a lifelong resident of Monroe County and attended school in the M.C.C.S.C. He graduated from Indiana University in 1975 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and attained an M.S. degree in 1977.  He also is licensed to teach computer technology. He began his teaching career at Brown Elementary School in 1975, taught at Templeton during 1982-83, and moved to Unionville in the fall of 1983. His first year was in the middle school and he has been in the elementary school ever since.

He has been married to the former Kathy Marty since 1976 and they have two sons, Trevor, born in
1988 and Evan, six years younger.

Mr. Shields has officiated high school football, basketball, and softball since his undergraduate days and officiates a full schedule in each sport. He also officiates women's basketball at the small college level. The exercise he gets and the competition keep him involved. He also enjoys the people he is able to deal with and the challenge of trying to do a good job under difficult situations.

His entire family is involved in the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church, www.socc.org and are active in local and state political circles. Mr. Shields was the County Campaign Coordinator for  Congressman John Hostettler  in his successful reelection campaigns of 1996 and 1998, and worked on both successful campaigns of 2000 and 2002 . He performed the same function for Congressman David McIntosh's campaign for governor in the 2000 election. He currently serves as the only teacher member of the Indiana Education Roundtable.

In his spare time Mr. Shields enjoys watching auto racing on television or attending races in person.  He is a fan of Jeff Gordon. Mr. Shields also enjoys the Indy Racing League and roots for A.J. Foyt's team. He enjoys talk radio preferring to listen to Rush Limbaugh or Dr. Laura. He also enjoys the Fox News Channel, especially political shows, such as Hannity & Colmes.  He serves as a guest host on The Afternoon Edition on WGCL AM1370/News Talk 95.9FM in Bloomington.

He is a firm believer in the concept of personal responsibility and people admitting their mistakes and working to correct them. No person lives a perfect life and mistakes are a form of education if used correctly. To repeat them is harmful, but learned from mistakes can turn out to be very helpful.

He is always interested in how parents feel the year is going and how their children are progressing. Parents are encouraged to send correspondence to school with comments, or to use phone calls or Email for the same purpose. Notes or phone calls sent to school and delivered to him in the morning will be responded to that school day.

It is sincerely hoped that this will be a school year that will be remembered with pleasure by everyone involved. Good, honest, communication will go a long way towards that goal.

 Mr. Shields
