Creating Teacher Webpage and Hotlist
Searching the Web
This workshop was designed for Netscape Navigator and Netscape Composer.

Workshop participants will:
1. Edit a teacher homepage template and save it to his or her computer locker.
2. Publish the homepage to the MONON server using FTP.
3. Perform web searches to locate webpages to support instruction.
4. Edit a teacher hotlist webpage.
5. Publish the hotlist to the MONON server using FTP.

1. Edit a teacher homepage template and save it to his or her computer locker.

Click to go to Teacher Homepage Template found at http://www.mccsc.edu/~cschaffe/schaffer.html OR navigate to your existing teacher homepage.
Edit the content to represent you and your classroom. Do this by clicking FILE and choosing EDIT PAGE.
Change the mailto link by dragging across Email the Teacher to select it and click the link button. Edit the text in the link to window so that it says your email username instead of bogusteacher. Click OK.
Change webpage title in Format menu/Page Colors and Properties. Choose General tab and edit content. Click OK.
Save As..changes to your locker. Name the file by using your last name or the word home.

2. Publish the homepage to the MONON server using FTP.
Open Start/Programs/Internet Applications/WS-FTP.
Enter your email username and password.

Left window is your computer and locker. Right window is MONON server.
Choose H: Choose www so remote system window reads /home/username/www

Highlight item(s) on left to move. Click arrow to right to move item(s) to MONON.
Be sure to move the html file and all images included in the webpage.
View your webpage on the web at www.mccsc.edu/~username/home.html or www.mccsc.edu/~username/lastname.html

3. Perform web searches to locate webpages to support instruction.
Professional Associations, Textbook Publishers, Universities and Colleges, Government Agencies, K-12 Organizations, Educational Television, Search Engines, Subscription Internet Resources. Go to Search the 'Net. Conduct searches and save favorites as bookmarks for now.

4. Edit a teacher hotlist webpage.
Go back to Technology Tutorials Online and find a hotlist page to "steal". Edit the contents as you did in step one for teacher homepage. Change title, links, content, mailto and perform Save As... Name the file list.

Editing links by typing the name of the webpage you wish to link to.
Select the text by dragging over the text and clicking the Link button.
Copy and paste the web address into the Link to field.
Click OK.

5. Publish the hotlist to the MONON server using FTP.
Open FTP, log in, navigate to your file on the left and WWW folder on right. Move file named list and any images by clicking the arrow pointing right. Review details in step 2 above.
