A native of Columbus, where he was a sophomore reserve on Bill Stearman's No. 1-ranked 1964 team that was unbeaten until the state semifinals, McKinney was a 25-year head coach, with a record of 415-168. The last 17 of those head-coaching years were at Bloomington North, where his teams won nine sectionals, two regionals, and two semi-states. His 1999-2000 team, which included current NBA players Jared Jeffries and Sean May, was undefeated until losing to Marion (and NBA star Zach Randolph) in the 4A championship game. McKinney coached five other Indiana All-Stars (Jeffries and May each was "Mr. Basketball"). He retired as North coach in 2004.
The Bloomington North Athletic Department recognized him at a boys varsity basketball game.

February 2005 the BHSN Main/East Gymnasium Floor was renamed in Honor of McKinney. Head boys basketball Coach Andy Hodson presented this honorable request personally to the school board, which
approved this action. Additionally Asst Athletic Director/Asst Coach Curt Simic and Principal Jim Rollins submitted a proposal to bestow
this honor on Coach McKinney.
January 2006 following the Girls's Basketball Senior Night ceremony and prior to the Lady
Cougars varsity basketball game, the Bloomington North Athletic Department
invited the entire Cougar family and the Bloomington Community to join in
honoring her outstanding contributions and Hall of Fame induction.
She served BHS North for many years as an educator, administrator, friend and pioneer in the field of women's athletics.
April 2006 she was inducted in to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. See Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame web:

Following are HELPFUL HINTS and suggestions to help ease planning and ensure a great time!
SELECT THE CO-CHAIRPERSONS Committee:
Try to include at least three members of the group, to take on the responsibilities of event chairpersons and treasurer, to sign all contracts and bank accounts.
Class Officers are not historically the ones who keep class reunions going, it is local classmates who have the interest.
Never allow one person to control all contracts and accounts.
SELECT SUB-COMMITTEES for other individual jobs:
Location arrangements, reservations, food, decorations, printed program, speakers, entertainment, invitations, photography, accommodations, publicity chairman, memory book chairman, name tags and awards.
DECIDE DATE and PLACE:
It is important to select the date and place early - at least a year or 18 months in advance, depending on the place and type of event.
Consider "fun" dates such as Homecoming or North vs South games.
Most CONTRACTS must be signed one year in advance.
GATHER NAMES, ADDRESSES:
Contact BHSN ALUMNI to inquire if we have your class list. Return the updated list after the reunion event, for safekeeping. We do not share information.
SET a PRELIMINARY BUDGET, taking into consideration cost of:
Bar, centerpieces, entertainment, food, gifts, invitation postage and printing, location, nametags, pictures, prizes, room size, speakers, tables, videos.
FUNDRAISE:
Determine a creative way to make money for the event, consider a silent auction, sell tickets to win Tee shirts, ask everybody to pitch in, ask parents of classmates with businesses to sponsor, or sell Ad space in printed program at $25 per business card Ad.
PLAN EVENT:
Make a time line of necessary steps and tasks, including making site reservations, dates for printing and mailing, making nametags and setting up for the event.
Offering activities to accommodate families may ensure a better turnout. If an overnight stay is planned, try to arrange for group rates at a local hotel or motel. Consider arranging for babysitting service.
Be creative when planning. The possibilities are endless! Have a theme, display memorabilia, conduct a silent auction and use the proceeds to benefit the reunion, or present awards or assemble a songbook.
SEND INVITATIONS:
COMMUNICATION IS KEY. Give as much information as possible in each mailing to build interest. Request help in locating members of the reunion group. List members found or planning to attend to build excitement. Invite members their significant others and/or families.
Send the invitation at least eight to sixteen weeks in advance. Be sure to include: the final response date necessary to confirm attendance, cost, hotel/motel information, mention any special guests or if babysitting is available.
