Bloomington High School North won the state championship for the second-level division at Japanese Olympiad of Indiana held at DePauw University in Greencastle on Saturday, February 25th. 


Approximately 100 students from nine Indiana high schools participated in the day-long academic tournament. The students were quizzed on Japanese translation, communication, reading comprehension, proverbs, geography, history and culture. The judges were professors from IUB, IUFW, Earlham College, and University of Notre Dame.  


BHS North teams have placed in the top three in this state competition since 2006.  Molly Jeon is the BHS North Japanese teacher and JOI coach. 


The second-level team of Syd Overtoom, Jacob Owens, and Emily Dawkins beat out Indiana Academy and Michigan City this year. 


The third-level team which included Austin Chappell, Dylan Porter and Seong Joon Park placed 6th. The fourth-level team of Chase Hastings, Stephanie Gano, and Gabrielle Collard were edged out of the 3rd place position by just one question. They placed fourth place for their division.


The winning teams were awarded a plaque for the classroom and ribbons to take home. The awards were presented to the teams by Mr. Toshihisa Kato who is the Director of the Japan Information Center at The Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago.
