The MCCSC Web SiteEvolution of the Web SiteArchitecture of MCCSC Connectivity Evolution of the Web SiteWith today's sensational focus on frivilous uses, censorship, pornography, and other stories about the Internet, schools are developing use of the Web and the Internet as an important and integrated part of lifelong learning. The MCCSC Learning Network is an example of what the relationship between schools and the Internet can be. The MCCSC Learning Network -- the text, resource links, curriculum development, school and building pages, and other information -- is as much a product as it is a part of the Web. It has evolved out of collaboration between Indiana University's University Computing Services, Bloomington-Monroe County's HoosierNet, the MCCSC's Office of Information Services and Office of Curriculum/Assessment/Instruction, installation contractors, and a wide variety of individuals. Whatever style and organization it may have is a product of extensive Web surfing, voluminous reading, and invaluable advice and criticism. |

Adler and Associates -- vendor and installation contractor for 94-95
school year purchases -- installed the Web server as part of the BSD-OS
UNIX setup in March of 1995.
Tim Wootton (MCCSC electronics technician) created a home page using Indiana University resources temporarily provided to help us establish interest and awareness. University Computing Services (UCS) has been providing resources for tens of thousands of students and faculty and supporting applications and services that the MCCSC is just now discovering and installing. Carl Zager (MCCSC Instructional Technology Coordinator), inspired by Tim and with his advice, created an MCCSC site and personal pages on IU resources and began searching for a way to move those pages and Tim's to the monon.mccsc.edu Web server. Karen Portle (MCCSC Director of Information Services and a member of the board of directors of HoosierNet -- the Bloomington-Monroe County community network which is the Internet Service Provider for the MCCSC) contacted Michael Chui (doctoral candidate in Computer Sciences and Executive Director of HoosierNet. Michael set the access rights to the Web server, created "public" rights within each user account, created "virtual" servers for each school by assigning IP (Internet Protocol) numbers for later migration to other "actual" computer boxes, and -- most importantly -- tutored Carl on UNIX file management.
Once assigned rights in the fall of 1996 as the "temporary webmaster" for
all the sites, Carl
began moving the MCCSC pages and graphics from IU to www.mccsc.edu
and creating homepage templates for each of the school servers. Currently
each MCCSC school
has a Web site registered with Internet search utilities. Teachers, media
specialists, and students are developing school, classroom, and personal
pages. The Administration and Service center sites are edited by
